As I continue my search for a piano, I go back and forth between a new upright, used upright, or digital. We aren't enamored with the digitals but the price difference sometimes inspires me to look at them more seriously.

Someone is selling a 2-year old Yamaha CVP-205, asking $3200. Is this worth taking a look, or is the technology too old (no GH3), or is the price way too high? Is it not advisable to buy a used one because the warranty does not transfer?

FWIW, I sold a CVP 207 some months back and got around $3000 for it, so $3200 seems a bit high.

It also depends on how much use it's had etc. Electronics, while pretty reliable, do break down, and the cost to fix them is not easy on the pocketbook, especially a digital piano.

I would suggest you try and find out how much use it's had etc, how many owners etc, and then try and talk them down a bit if it's warranted.

Hi Gpman,

Thanks for your advice. From the ad, it appears that it was barely used by their son who didn't like playing. It has only had one owner.

I guess I'll take a look next weekend, thanks!

Hello again,

That one in March was sold before I got there. However, I found another one today, asking $1499, barely used. I was planning to take a look tomorrow. I would use it for practice while the kids are asleep. Any comments...looks like it was introduced in 2001, so 5-year-old technology. Besides not having GH3, what other important features might it be missing?

You can compare the CVP-205 with a number of other Yamaha Clavinova CVP models using a comparison tool at:
http://music.yamaha.com
It's not perfect, but it works fairly well. You can also see the actual specifications.

You may also want to ask your question at:
http://www.cvpug.com

Unless you really want the additional features of the CVP series, you may want to take a look at the CLP-2xx series (released last year). With a new Clavinova, you'll also get a new warranty - I "think" it's still 5/1 years.

Thanks for the info. Would a new CLP-2xx cost at least twice the amount of this used CVP? I seem to recall looking at the Yamaha store and the prices seemed high, like at least $3000.

I'll check out the CVP group, too, thanks for the link!

keep in mind, there was the cvp205, then the cvp206, and now the cvp305
