Just thinking. My old (1912?) Krakauer in very rough condition but still plays. Holds tune somewhat but could use cyanoacrylate treatment, soundboard ok. Needs hammers and action repairs. Are any frame rails interchangeable between brands to give a quick fix. Or is this too far out to consider. I want to send it to the dump but my son has strong sentimental attachments to it. Lots of better uprights being given away free that I could scavenge from. Probably get blasted for this question but thanks for any useful advice.

If either yourself or your son actually play the piano I would suggest treating this as an opportunity to get a better and more rewarding piano that will encourage you both to play. The better the piano needs to be to persuade him to let the old one go the better will be the piano you can enjoy :-)

Greeting,
Pianos are not built to last forever. There comes a time when the instrument is so compromised by age that it is false economy to keep it going. Time is the only thing we possess of value, and life is too short to spend it with an instrument that is only 40% of what it once was. Upgrade now and enjoy the music for longer.
Regards,

I strongly agree with everyone's remarks. I don't believe in sentimental attachment to a piano. As well be sentimentally attached to a clapped-out washing machine - "but think of all the little school socks it washed...."

Better to get an instrument that will bring joy and satisfaction rather than frustration.

There were hundreds of different action brackets. Contemporary action manufacturers bemoaned the fact that different piano manufacturers wanted different action brackets.

Thank you to all that replied. I greatly value your
suggestions. BDB, you confirmed what I suspected.
I am traveling from my Florida home to Cleveland today
and will share the responses I received. Thanks again.
