Hi, everyone...

Just wanted to get some feedback on purchasing a used Yamaha NU1.

The seller is asking $2300. It's in pristine condition. It plays well, sounds beautiful, and all electronic components are in working order.

Would you say this is a fair price? I know of the "loud note" issue but didn't hear evidence of it and am prepared to accept it if it is later evidenced.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

That is a good price. You can search my posts for recent AvantGrand prices. IThe warranty unfortunately is non-transferrable and you likely will be responsible for transport.

For reference, below are some used AvantGrands on the market now. Some of the ask prices are silly and several have been on the market for a long time. Feel free to lob in more reasonable offers if nearby.

Used NU1 in Boston for $4750 on ebay (typical new price at dealer)
NOS NU1 in NJ for $6179 from dealer (scratched with warranty. Maybe it $5179).

Used N2 in Boston for $8200 (typical new price at dealer)
Used N2 in San Mateo, CA for $4999 on piano buyer.

Used N1 in NJ for $6800 on piano buyer (above typical new price at dealer)
Used N1 in NJ for $8799 on ebay (above typical new price at dealer)

Used N3 in Kansas City for $14,000. (above typical new price at dealer)

Thanks. If I might ask, why didn't you buy it?

I put the deposit down to hold it and have the movers scheduled to pick it up on the 19th! I'm really excited! I'm in the NY metro area (Hudson Valley).

It’s a great piano. Actually I really enjoy the speakers on the N2, better than what I’ve experienced in a N1X and an NV10. I need the piano in NYC and actively searching for a N2 or NV10. I think it will cost me close to a $800 if I find a mover in Boston to ship to NYC given its 4 hours each way. I am holding out to see if I can purchase a new Nv10 and add studio monitors given the NJ warehouse is close to NYC. However I’m still looking for a competitive price. As someone pointed out, N2 market price should be around $8000 new if dealers were competitive. Faust Harrison didn’t seem to want to budge on N2 at all.

These ask prices are opportunistic, at best. The AvantGrand hybrids comes with an excellent factory, non-transferable, 5-year warranty in the US. They also are depreciating electronic consumer goods, so used hybrids should not be selling anywhere near new prices. You can always make a counter offer that is equally or less abusive.

Fortunately, there are a lot of used AvantGrand pianos coming to market during the year, especially in NY and NJ.

Used N2 models are not so common. I sample the market infrequently, but for reference:

- 7 May 2020, there were at least two for sale in NY on PianoBuyer (ask of $5,000 and $8,250).

- 28 July 2019 there were at least two for sale in NY area on Craigslist (ask $7195 and $5999).

Interestingly, we have seen plenty of N3 models with ask prices roughly in the $6-$9k range (you can search the forums for actual ask prices). So if you want the ultimate hybrid speaker system, this is a good option. And the N3 comes up much more frequently in the used market.

I recall seeing only one used NV-10 on offer in the US (Boston area, asking near new price but no factory warranty).

So...if you can wait a few months for more used pianos to come to market and are not too picky on exact models, great deals can be had.

Thanks newer player. That is very good advice. I had been eyeing a N3x at a dealer in Londonderry at mid $9000 but couldn’t seem to make the dimensions work in our very tight apartment. I’ll keep looking! Thanks again

True. I bought a used (2014) N3 in AZ for $6500 (before tax and shipping) from a Yamaha dealer with a 90 day warranty covered (which I used twice after purchase). I can't imagine what the original owner must have sold it to that dealer for. But then he upgraded it for a Yamaha TransAcoustic so maybe they gave him a good deal on his trade-in. I snatched it up the same day I saw it because I assumed that it would go fast. It was barely on the floor for a couple of days when I stumbled on it.

Hello,
I am sorry it does not fit completely in this thread, but I am selling my CA98, bought in Oct2019, excellent condition, and seem to not
be able to sell it for 2.3-2.4k dollar. Am I asking too much? It seems very reasonable to me, but maybe I am wrong. I got an offer for under 1.8k dollar
which seemed too low to me for an almost new instrument.

You could already help me by pointing to a right place (I didn't want to start a thread for this).

The prices paid listings show two US sales of the CA98: Sep-2018 for $5399 and Jun-2019 for $4000.
And in the EU, two sales: Apr-2019 for 2900 EUR ($3236 US equivalent) and May-2019 for 3100 EUR ($3474 US equivalent).
Where are you located?

It a given that digital pianos lose value quickly. But $2300 is already a big drop from whatever new price you might have paid. It's a very reasonable price. Frankly I'd ask for more ... and then allow a potential buyer to "work me down" to $2300.

I think it takes a lot of patience to wait for a willing buyer. If you're not in a hurry I'd suggest you keep waiting.

Note that the $1800 offer could be a shill. It might be somebody who is trying to "grease" you ... only to return later as a seemingly different person offering $2000.
The latter offer will seem good after the earlier $1800 low-ball. It's a modern-day trick/scam. Don't fall for it.

Thanks for your answer. He says he is now willing to go up to 2130 dollar (i am converting by the way, i am from europe with Euros), and he would 'immediately' take it etc.
Thats lower than my lower bound but a lot more reasonable than the 1.8k nonsense.

What is your opinion? I am trying to sell it already for quite some time. I could theoretically wait but apparently there is no need for this instrument where I live in.

I don't have any opinion about how much you might be willing to accept. That's a personal decision.

As for the buyer ... please be cautious. There are lots of scammers out there.

Some warning signs:
1. The buyer has made two offers without even seeing the piano. That **might be** suspicious. I wouldn't make an offer sight-unseen, but scammers often do.

2. Think about safety. When selling small items you can arrange to meet the buyer at a public place. I've read that some people do so in front of their local police station!
But that's not practical when selling a large, heavy piano. So have a person or two with you at home when the buyer comes to look.
