It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
Tuning was easy for me. I cant understand why some insist that it cant be DIY.
I'm sure there are some people who would struggle to tune, but many have no problem. Just get a good phone app, take your time, make tiny adjustments, and make sure you aren't turning the wrong tuning pin🤣. That can happen!
The tuning app does most of it, but it is very helpful to know what two unmatched strings sound like when played together. I think it's an oscillating or "whaa, whaa, whaa" sound, if that makes sense.
If you have access to a guitar, tuning it a few times may help you. I had played strings for years.
As for the sticking keys, I would play that key and another, as I watched carefully and listened. If it feels like there is a bind or something unusual, I would be careful.
See if it gets less sticky with some playing.
Then I would carefully remove the action, after watching a video. Dont break hammers! Then I would carefully work the action again, while watching.
I AM AN AMATEUR and an avid DIYer. Some action adjustments need special tools and can be tricky. Sometimes its easier/better to let a pro do them, unless you just really want to learn.
Tuning compared to action adjustment, is very straightforward, in my opinion. I would gladly tune someone's nice piano, but wouldn't touch their action, because of my inexperience. At the same time, I wouldn't hesitate to look my action over and make a decision from there.
If your tolerances are low enough, tuning is very easy. You may not even have to do it at all.
This reminds me of a story I heard once.
A comedian asked a piano tuner, "Is tuning a piano as easy as it looks?'
The piano tuner, knowing that the gentleman was a comedian, proudly joked, "If your tolerances are low enough, tuning is very easy. You may not even have to do it at all."
The comedian didn't laugh. Instead, he berated the tuner. All of the other comedians and the comedian's customers, from comedianworld.com, joined in and belittled the tuner from thinking he could make jokes.
As the tuner walked away, he turned and looked at the comedian one last time before saying, "Man, it's a tough crowd in here tonight!"
