The march they break into at the end (I can't think of the name of it ..argh)... is played in the Vienna New Year's Day concert every year.
We watch it on TV - but going to attend in person is on my list of "things I would love to do".

To be honest, I have always loathed "The Entertainer." To me it is on par with "Wheels on the Bus," "99 bottles of Beer," or that Barney the Dinosaur song.

I applaud Waldemar Malicki for his efforts, as any change to that piece of music can only be considered a good change. But, alas, the piece is unsalvageable; nothing good can or will ever come from it, ever - regardless what is done to it.

In all seriousness, you have a good point. Joplin's got so many other hidden gems which are of much greater musical quality. The 1st and 4th strains of Entertainer are low quality, musically, when compared to some of his other compositions. The 2nd and 3rd section (which changes to F-major) are actually the "entertaining" aspects of this piece.

I guess it's the most well-known because of "The Sting" but not definitely not his best work. "Maple Leaf" is actually a favorite amongst pianists of all genres - now that's a quality piece! I'll be playing this in the upcoming recital.

Whenever I hear an ice cream truck go by, I wonder what Scott Joplin would have thought. In The Entertainer's favor, how many works of art grow up to become motorized memes?

I don't remember the ice cream trucks in New York blaring The Entertainer.

Michael Taylor: I don't know about New York ice cream trucks, but when we were in Malta they BLARED Lili Marlene - now THAT was weird.

While I agree that not every one likes the same music (why should they? ) I would never put the Entertainer on the same level as 99 Bottles of Beer -that has got to be THE most irritating song chant ever.
(Wheels on the bus might be a close second, but honestly I haven't heard it as much as 99 bottles.)

Für Elise is another I've heard an ice cream truck playing. On YouTube, many of "the masses" refer to Entertainer as the "ice cream truck song." lol In both cases, only the main theme is played, and it's obvious that a lot of pianists snub both of them...lol. Both of these pieces are in my rep. too.

I think Scott and Ludwig turn over in their graves when that ice truck passes by...lol

I personally LIKE "The Entertainer". But then, my senior tap class used it for one of our recitals, and I really got to know it well and can still picture the steps.

Ice cream trucks in NJ play "Turkey in the Straw". LOL
