Hello, I recently found this forum and I think it is great. However, I seem to have found a problem with my new Roland FP-7 and would like to get some advice.

I am not sure if this issue is exclusive to headphone output because I have never connected it to anything else. But what I have been noticing is that I will get random "pops" in the sound in either the left or right channel (never both simultaneously). This occurs at all volumes at the default gain gain level for the amp. This also seems to occur randomly. I have tried using different headphones and the noise persists.

So i'm wondering if anybody else has experienced this with their FP-7 and if this is something I should contact Roland about. I've been reluctant because I don't exactly know how to describe the problem all that well so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I just purchased the FP-7 this past week.
I have tried headphones for a brief time and it sounded great, with no other noises.

I'll test both jacks a little more this weekend.

I'm wondering if it may be electronic interference from appliances, or other equipment. I know that cell phones tend to interfere with digital pianos occasionally.

Cheers!

Do you hear the pops in the speakers?

Do the pops occur when playing hard, soft, or doesn't matter?

Do the pops ever happen when you're not playing at all?

Are you able to make a recording of it?

Had the FP-7 for a few months.

I'm getting that popping sound through the onboard speakers and monitor speakers using unbalanced TS cables, but not with headphones. It doesn't happen every playing session, and usually the interference isn't loud enough to make me stop playing... If/when I hear that popping sound through headphones, I'll contact Roland.

Perhaps the FP-7's ground terminal needs to be connected with an external ground to eliminate the random "pops"? [shrug] confused

I have the FP-7 for a week. I'm getting a slight pop on the right onboard speakers (headphones are ok) too. I tried the floor model and noticed the pop was also there.

This seems to happen why I play loud high-registered chords. I suspect the on-speakers aren't designed very well... frown

Yes, I am mostly noticing it in the right channel. I rarely play with the onboard speakers so I can't really tell you if it's there or not.

To answer a few more questions - It occurs when playing both soft or hard. It hasn't occured when playing nothing at all yet.

I have tried different outlets but I still have the same problem. Roland suggests I buy a power conditioner but i'm thinking about having them service it anyway because my warranty is almost up.

The fact that this happens at various volume settings and not in both channels simultaneously makes me think it could be a side effect of digital clipping.

Is the master gain set to 0db? (page 123)

As a test, try lowering all the equalizer gains to about -6db. See page 123 Changing the Equalizer Settings for the procedure. What we're trying to do is reduce the gain while still in the digital domain.

I did as you requested Mike, and I still noticed the popping right away. =/

I really don't know much about electronics so I guess the only choice i'm left with is to have them service it =(

Sounds like it. I suggest you try a full factory reset first. That will be the first thing the technician tries unless they already know what the cause is.

FP-7 plugged into a surge strip.

Played through each headphone jack approx an hour each over weekend.

Thankfully, no popping sounds.
Have not heard it through on board speakers either.

I prefer the sound through headphones, seems a little brighter and clearer.
On board speakers sound a little duller.
Have not messed with EQ setting yet.

Does anyone have some good setting to brighten up Grand Piano 1 from on board speakers ?

Thanks
Danna

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I was curious what this popping sound is like? Is it like a very light static-y crackle/pop?

I hear this on my newly acquired DP-990, though it happens very seldom and is difficult to recreate.

I'm also curious whether this is due to faulty wiring or a bad cap or something.
