Haha.. just looking through the past winners at the Cliburn: Sixth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition (1981) 1. André-Michel Schub, USA 2. (tied) Panayis Lyras, USA Santiago Rodriguez, USA 4. Jeffrey Kahane, USA 5. Christopher O’Riley, USA 6. Da Ming Zhu, People’s Republic of China Was this because of the Cold War or something, or were the US competitors actually good enough to clean house? If so, good show.

That was the year the Russians boycotted the Cliburn because the US boycotted the Moscow Olympics because Russia had invaded Afghanistan.

Haha...cool. Have you guys checked out the prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc; they're pretty "hefty". First Prize
Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Gold Medal Cash award of $20,000 Performance attire provided by Neiman Marcus International concert tours and career management for the three concert seasons following the Competition Compact disc recording on the harmonia mundi label Contribution towards domestic and international air travel on American Airlines during the three-year concert tours Silver trophy cup And I think it's really cool how all the finalists get the "International concert tours and career management for the three concert seasons".

I couldn't be more pleased with the results. Kobrin was the flipping energizer bunny. While the rest of them started flagging in the stamina/nerves department, he just kept going and going. And not just that; he got better and better.

Sadly, I did not see the gold medalist perform. My internet was down during the streaming video of his performance. But I did see Joyce perform, and thought that she deserved to win (of the five I saw). So, being that she took second, I cannot argue for first place, since I did not get the chance to see him play. But I thought Joyce was superb, and even if she missed a few notes, they all did.
Every day we are afforded a new chance. The problem with life is not that you run out of chances. In the end, what you run out of are days.

One can play these runs or arpeggios much faster than if played by one hand alone and they are thus flashier and more exciting. Let me know if that makes sense to you.

I thought I heard that everyone got US tours except the gold medal winner who got an international tour.

Has anyone been able to get the audio files on the dfw.com multimedia section to work? If so, what software and what version # were you using to open it?
The files are listed as being Realmedia files when I try and open them, but then I get a message saying that Realplayer doesn't have the software available to play them and that no downloads of the required software are available.

The audio files on that site are just mp3. I downloaded most of them. You can open them using iTunes.

Alternatively, it looks like their streaming multimedia page is up again at http://www.dfw.com/multimedia/dfw/news/cliburn/cliburn.html (click at the bottom left where it says "listen to every note of each performance", though as of yet only the recitals are up there). It seems to be working much better than last week.
