I think his performance was very good but I quickly noticed that he seems to be seated extremely low. Do you know if his teacher has ever discussed this with him? I can't see in the video, but is he sitting on a normal piano bench? I can't imagine a standard bench be that low. Although a few excellent pianists, notably Glenn Gould, have sat extremely low, I definitely think that his bench height would be considered an extreme outlier and not recommended find many teachers.

Thanks very much for the response! I don't think he is low at all, and his teacher would have commented had she believed so.

His elbows appear very close to the level of the keys, maybe slightly above - which is exactly what’s usually recommended. His back is upright, shoulders relaxed, and his forearms are roughly parallel to the floor. That’s textbook ergonomic posture.

Perhaps you are deceived somewhat by the camera angle?

For a little context, James has been learning the piece for approximately 6 weeks, and had a single lesson on it before summer break.

I think the plan may be to later add movements 1 and 2 (after taking time to perfect this movement).

It could be the camera angle. In the video it appears he is sitting incredibly low(I actually thought he might sitting on some kind of cushion and not even a chair or bench), with elbows way below the keyboard and forearms angling down from the keyboard. When you say his elbows are level with the keys are you talking about when you look at them or in the video?

When I look at him play 😊

I think what happens with the perspective is if you look at the angle of the piano, it has similar slope to his arms which may be why it looks a bit like this. Also the stool is obstructed from view. We're in quite a cramped space and I was sat behind him.

I guess everything is fine then. You you certainly seem aware of the commonly recommended playing positions so it must be the camera angle.

Nice. I like how he doesn't overpedal the piece.
