Someone recently told me that Yamaha voice samples (strings is what he specifically mentioned) will begin to decay even when the sustain pedal is held. This will be quite a different experience from my Roland where I layer piano and strings and hold the pedal to allow me time to transition to the next song. (Obviously the piano sample will decay naturally, but why would strings decay?) Does the decay occur even whilst holding the keys on the keyboard?

On my P-515 that is completely false. Holding the sustain pedal will decay the strings, holding the sos pedal will not as will holding your fingers on the keys will not decay the strings.
Finally bought the P515

So the sostenuto pedal on a Yamaha will hold/loop the strings sound continuously, but using the sustain pedal will not?

Some instruments allow this behaviour to be defined (i.e. damper pedal sustains strings indefinitely, or natural fade out). This is the case for most Kawai DPs, and I would expect Roland and Yamaha offer similar adjustable settings. Kind regards, James x
