Hello
I am looking for an inexpensive module with Yamaha DX piano sound. Would you recommend anything?
I already found some second hand Yamaha modules: TG33, TG55, FB-01 and TX81Z but I am not sure wheter they have DX piano sound.
Regards

The FB-01 and TX81Z are full blown FM synths from the 80s. I know the FB01 was four operator, but I don’t recall for the TX81Z. Both are programmable, so you could create whatever FM piano sound you want. The FB01 however required software to program, and I highly doubt such software is available for it anymore. That said, my recollection was that it had about a half dozen DX piano sounds or more. Won’t sound quite as good as a DX7 though, given the fewer operators.

I'm assuming the "DX piano" is a piano patch for the DX7. Those patches are available for download.

You could find an FM software synth that accepted original DX7 patches -- "DexEd" is one example, there are others.

The Korg Volca FM -- I think -- will take DX7 patches as well. The Volca keyboard is just about useless, but the sound generator is a full 6-operator FM implementation, and it has "MIDI In". Velocity-sensitivity is a problem, and it's only 3-voice polyphonic.

Google "Volca FM MIDI" to get more information.

The TX81Z is 6 operator, fwiw. And programmable from the front panel.

Hi Guys! Thank you for responses.

I already installed DexEd software but I have a problem with latency - I am unable to find option for ASIO driver on DexEd menu.
Anyone have any experience with DexEd and know where to add proper ASIO driver?

I doesn’t seems the standalone Dexed application is ASIO compliant. You may try to load it in a VST host. My favorite is Reaper, but the simpler VSThost software may do the job.

As for hardware modules:

There's the old Yamaha P-50m with some DX pianos and pads (and "90's Clavinova" acoustic grands, pretty good Yamaha CP-80 sounds, mediocre Rhodes and Wurlitzer pianos etc.):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OhfDcXUq7v8

Yamaha's old MU and QY modules all probably have DX pianos and pads as part of the XG sounds set.

Probably Roland's SoundCanvas modules too.

I already installed Reaper and DexEd sounds well, without latency.
Thank you so much Frédéric smile
How long time Reaper will be working for free? I understand that it isn't for free and will stop working soon - am I right?

Since I have purchased it, it will work for me forever. wink (Well until the auto-update of Windows breaks something)

I have read that the 60 days limit is not enforced, you should just be reminded that it should be used for evaluation.

To save in reaper, just 'save' under the file menu ( this will save midi and/or audio) and to convert to wave or mp3, go to 'render', also under the file menu. All this will work, even if you haven't yet bought the program.

That price seems fair enough.

I installed them but it's much more complicated for me than Reaper. I am unable to find my VSTs and keyboard through them.

Free if your honour is worthless. grin

Yes, the free Cantabile Lite could be handy as a simple VST host.
