Hi All,
It has been a while. I just spotted a nine foot one Samick for sale model WSG-275. From the looks it is by an open window and radiator so not sure how soundboard will be.
I already own a Kawai six foot 3. Nice. Will I really hear the difference and feel the difference in action? I used to swear away Samick. How bad could a nine footer be?
I just cannot afford a Steinway or a Yamaha Conservatory grand.
Any thoughts?
Thank you!! Jim

I think you have some research to do before anyone can answer any questions, even of a general nature, on this piano. First, you need to get the serial number to find out the date of manufacture, as Samick manufacture has undergone changes in recent decades. I note that in the current Piano Buyer their largest grand listed is a 6' 1" (186 cm.). This could be an older generation piano whose history will have to be verified. Then, you have to try the piano and see how it sounds and feels. Then, you have to find out how/if the piano has been maintained Then, if you're still interested, you have to get a technician to closely examine the piano to find out if it has any issues.
It's not just the soundboard that might be affected by the piano's position under a window next to a radiator. "How bad could a nine-footer be?" Size alone doesn't determine the quality of a piano. It could be as bad as any bad piano if it has been neglected, or if it has issues; it all depends on the condition. Only a technician examining the piano can give you answers to those questions.

Bruce gave great advice.
I have only seen one Samick 9 ft. grand in my career. It was a larger version of what they offered at the time. (This was in the early 1990's). It was not a spectacular piano as I remember, but it wasn't bad.
Although they were on their price list for years, I never knew a Samick dealer to stock a 9 ft. piano and I imagine they did not sell many, as most 9 ft. grand buyers are usually looking towards the upper quality manufacturers.
Keep us posted,

Go look at it. If it's just some regulation and minor repairs away from being a piano you'd want to keep for decades, it might be worth getting, if the price is low enough. Otherwise, you could stuff tons of money into it, and all you'd have is an extreme oddball that you'd never get your money back out of.... There are Baldwin concert grands out there in the $20K - $30K range and other reputable makes. Check out spec pianos from local rebuilders. Look around at the local concert grand market and get the big picture before you part with your cash.
Also, have your tech inspect whatever piano you get close to buying before you negotiate the final price. Look yourself first before you spend money on a tech inspection.

There have already been some great replies here.
I'm wondering what your goals are. Are you replacing your Kawai? If so, what are you hoping to achieve?

Ok, here's my SWAG for the day...I'm guessing it is a World Series. If so, yeah, I'd go look at it. If it's in good shape, you have the classic conundrum - the better built Japanese vs. the big Korean.
I can see coming down on either side of that fence.
