Hi,

I am not familiar with electronic pianos and I am about to buy a 2 years used CLP 340 and wondering if there is anything special I should verify on the machine before "finalizing" transaction ?

Also, is anyone know if Yamaha will honor the remaining of the warranty without any problem in that case (3 years) ?

Thanks for your help !

(1) do NOT overpay for a used piano. Look at the prices for a brand new YDP160 or P155 before you pay to much for a used CLP These two pianos are very much like the CLP340

(2) Yamaha's Warranty is not transferable to the new owner. If someone says otherwise then you need to read the text top to bottom yourself.

How to test the piano. Play it, bring sheet music and play the piano for at least 20 minutes. That is a very simple test but will turn up any big issues.

Nest play every black and white key. Do many one handed scales. Operate every control and listen. Turn the volume up 1005 and listen. veryify the headphone juacks work and MIDI and line out too. Unless the seller has a written offer to take it back anything that is broken is on you best to discover this before you buy.

Likely there is nothing wrong. These pianos are very reliable but don't pay a lot the very most you should ever pay is 66% of a good discounted new piano. Not 66% on list price, 66% of the best "street price".

Thanks Chris, I appreciate your response which make me think a bit more about it.

The person is selling it for 2300 CAD (~ same in USD). Then if I follow you reasoning that should be a bit expensive for an used one right ?

For the point (2) I finally called Yamaha Canada. They told me they would honor the warranty if I have the receipt with the serial number on it.

If it has any of the several wood finishes, then this $2300 price is WAY too high. You could have bought it new two years ago for just a bit more than that.

If this piano has the more expensive polished-ebony finish, then the $2300 price is not terribly bad. But it's still too high for a used piano.

I don't know where Chris gets his two-thirds figure from. I think a piano in good condition would need to be older than two years to merit that much depreciation.

Still, you might want to go lower than $2300. (The price of these pianos is negotiable when new, so why not negotiate the price of a used one?)
