Don't laugh. This explains a lot of things now! wink

Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D. - Age Activated
Attention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests itself:

I decide to wash the car. As I start toward to the garage, I notice
there's mail on the kitchen table. I decide to go through the mail before I
wash the car. I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the
trash can, and notice that the trash can's full. So, I decide to put the
bills back on the table and take out the trash. But then I think, since I'll
be near the mailbox when I take out the trash, I might as well pay the bills
first.

I take my checkbook off the table, and see there's only one check
left. My extra checks are on the desk in the bedroom. So I go to the desk
where I find the can of Coke I'd been drinking. I'll look for my checks, but
first I need to push the Coke aside so I don't accidentally knock it over.
Because the Coke is getting warm, I decide to put it in the
refrigerator.

As I head toward the kitchen, a vase of flowers on the counter
catches my eye--they need to be watered. I set the Coke down on the counter,
and discover the reading glasses I've been searching for all morning.
I decide I'd better put them back on my desk, but first I'll water
the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container
with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it by the
computer. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, we'll be looking
for the remote, but nobody'll remember where it is. So I decide to put it
back where it belongs, after I water the flowers.

I splash some water on the flowers, but most of it spills on the
floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe
up the spill. Then I head down the hall, trying to remember what I was
planning to do.

At the end of the day; the car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid,
there's a warm can of Coke sitting on the counter, the flowers aren't
watered, there's still only one check in my checkbook, I can't find the
remote, I can't find my glasses, and I don't remember what I did with the
car keys.

Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really
baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired. I
realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but
first I'll check my e-mail.

Do me a favor, will you? Forward this message
to close friends you know, because I don't remember whom I've already sent
it to. Don't laugh! If this isn't you yet, your day is coming! And if I've
sent this to you before...well, now you know why.

Make a list, my friend. Do not move on to the next thing until you've crossed off the previous item on the list. SSRI's such as Prozac or Paxil help as well. Exercise and caffeine help as well.
Classical music helps.

I read this same thing a few months ago and was planning on posting it but I misplaced it somehow. Thanks for reminding me, if I ever find it again, I'll post it for you to see if YOU like it.

JohnC,

I'm sorry, I was laughing all the way through!

WE'RE RELATED!!

I'll add a couple of things. ME vs. THE STAIRS.

Why is it that when you forget something upstairs, it occurs to you only when you've reached the bottom of the stairs? Sometimes, I go kinda nuts over this. I think to myself, "ok, now THINK. . . is there anything else you need before going down/up the stairs. Nope. Ok, do it."
And I get upstairs and within seconds realize. . .

ME vs. THE KITCHEN TOWELL.

Pick something up, like, a towell. Put the towell down. Do something else. Need the towell. Where's the towell?
Start to turn to look for it. Keep turning, still don't see it. Going 'round and 'round like a lighthouse beacon looking for the stupid towell, start to feel like an idiot losing the sanity war to a towell so GET SMART GUY! -- start stepping backwards towards the corner of the kitchen looking back and forth like radar at the counters scan left - scan right - scan left - right. . . THERE IT IS!! Ahaaa! you blasted rag!! And when I spot it, I pick it up and squeeze it hard and whip it around for use, hoping by some unknown unexplainable means I can inflict some pain on a towell and teach it to behave. . .

I could go on with other examples, but I gotta run upstairs and discipline our towells.

This morning I was in the kitchen looking out at the bird feeder in the backyard and thought, "I need to put more lead in my mechanical pencil". On my across the dining room (now piano troom) to my office I thought, "better pick up my watch on my way through here and put it on AND I better remember that other thing that occurred to me while looking at the bird feeder". I had no sooner sat down in my office chair and fastened on my watch than I realized that I completely forgot what the other thing was I wanted to do. I walked back in the kitchen and stared at the bird feeder in hopes that the memory would resurface but to no avail. I went back into my office, thought hard on the subject and gave up until my eye fell upon the back of my keyboard drawer. It was then that I remembered that I keep a few containers of 0.05 lead in the little bins back there and I was back in business. I even hunted down the little green box of erasers that kicks around back there and replaced that as well. In twenty years I will be lucky if I remember what a bird feeder looks like.

Oh no. I do things like that all the time!
JBryan: I always forget about things so easily too! It drives me insane when it happen!
And, I will always loose something just seconds after I just had it in my hand. Like yesterday, I had JUST been looking at a book, set it down for about one second, decided that I wanted to look at it again, and then spent the next 10 minutes looking for it!
ARGH! This kind of thing shouldn't be happening to me yet for at least another 50 to 60 years! (well, hopefully it would never, ever happen, but you know what I mean). I'm not even 20 yet!!!

It's called being "stimulus bound".

Awful.

A friend gave me a fancy electronic device to locate my car keys. It's great! You attach one part to the keys and then whenever you forget where they are, you just beep the other part.

Haha. How to keep track of THAT part? I tossed it (with guilty, kindly thoughts towards my friend).

Instead I relied on my tried and true method of simply having dozens (over time) of car keys duplicated so there was always one handy.

But now my hand-me-down car has an electronic transmitter key. Uh-oh. It's just a matter of time until I miss a dentist appointment (or a child) when I can't find one of the two that came with the car.

P.S. Steve Miller. You win!! laugh laugh laugh

I keep meaning to copy and send the first post to my wife, but it means I have to start e-mail, get back to the browser, scroll to the top, select the text, and neatly avoid all the bright shiny objects in the new posts box.

Impossible.

I've been meaning to share how I have not acquired those type of behavior patterns, but AM them..(but kept putting it off for some reason..)

Thank you Ariel for giving it a name. I knew it was something.

It is a terrible disease. Things take way longer than they used to. Yesterday, I spent the afternoon doing yardwork. I think half the time was wasted standing around in the driveway trying to remember where I put my gloves and shovel. I got about 17 of the 257 (+/-) bulbs I bought planted. I will promptly forget where I have planted them and kill more than a few when I accidentally slice them in half putting in the annuals in a couple of months...
