There appears to be a shortage of info on this short-lived piano company. Anyone know of a web-site, or place to gather info on pianos and build dates?

Short of them being built in Hamamatsu, Japan with afew listed serial numbers in P.Atlas.. there is not much around.

The Tokai grand I worked on has a serial number much larger than the last listed for 1983.

The only info I can offer on them is that Tokai are proof that Japan doesn't always make good quality. I would place Tokai among the poorest of Asian pianos, not alongside Japanese-made Yamahas or Kawais. I think their whole market appeal was based on the assumption that a Japanese piano is supposed to be good, and Tokai offered 'Japanese quality' for less.

I'm not sure why they dropped out of the market, but I'm glad they did.

Regards,

Rick Clark

I believe they make disposable cigarette lighters now. I've seen the name on them.

I do not know if this helps any but I purchased my Tokai C-106LWP (41" Upright) around 1986 or 1987 and it is serial number 421245.

I think mine is a pretty good quality piano. No competition for my new Kawai baby grand but the Tokai has been a good sounding practice piano with a somewhat heavy (stiff) action. The action has become a little less stiff after 20 years of playing but this little piano has held up very well.

I also know my Tokai upright piano has bass agraffes and double felted hammers with Royal George felt held in place by T pins.

I have been looking all over the place for information on Tokai pianos as I am trying to sell mine and information on Tokai is fairly hard to find. blubookofpianos.com indicates that Tokai was at one time the third largest musical instrument manufacturer in Japan. I have no idea whether that is, or was, true or not.

Hope this helps.
