In Bach's fourth Invention (d minor), bars 19-21 have a trill in the right hand between c2 and d2.

My edition shows the fingering as: 132313231323, etc.

Why can't I just use 12121212 or 23232323? Later on the left hand plays a trill between e and f, and one of the options for that trill is 21212121.

So why does Busoni insist I use 3 fingers for the right hand trill instead of just 2?

You can use whatever fingering you like! smile

132313231323 is called "Thalberg's Trill". Thalberg was a famous pianist, and this is the fingering he used for trilling, thus the name and fame of the "Thalberg Trill".

Edwin Fischer edition gives 1/3 for the trill and some prefer that for fingering rather than the changing fingering you mentioned or the 1/2 or 2/3 mentioned. In the end, use what is most comfortable for you and achieves the musical objective! smile
