This board has an ignore function, and you can make it so you do not see someone's posts. Just bring up their profile through Community Directory and add them to your ignore list.

It's kind of extreme and a bit the antithesis of a public forum, but it is better than getting your blood pressure up over PF.

(unless you like that sort of thing, of course wink )

Does the ignore function also block PM's from that person? Or is there a separate function for that? I'd rather be able to block PMs than not see the posts of an individual. (It could make it difficult to follow what other people are saying in response.)

you can easily block PMS in your profile by simply putting someone on your ignore list. If i have someone on my ignore list (and I did long ago) I could still see his (if he was a he) posts.

The Ignore feature only works for PMs. It doesn't hide the public posts of those on the list.

Cool... Does the person being ignored know that their PMs get bounced? [she asks, not entirely hypothetically. laugh ]

This thread got me curious about other forum features, so I clicked on "buddy list" and discovered that if you make a buddy list you can cut down on a few steps when trying to PM somebody.

That's a good question, Monica. I suspect it's true, though I haven't had the experience.

I wonder how common it is for people with a mutual antipathy to correspond privately anyway.

Okay, I got the answer to my question... in addition to the post above, I just tried to PM Mik, and I got an error message that says "Sorry, you are on this person's Ignore List. You cannot send that person a PM."

This is actually interesting from a social psychological perspective. There's a lot of recent work on rejection and ostracism showing that the pain of social rejection uses the same neural and brain mechanisms as physical pain, and many research participants state that they would rather be physically bullied than ostracized.

The "ignore list" feature really gives an in-your-face dimension to ostracism.

Well, it's only rude if the person tries to PM you and then gets the bad news. So I suspect that most people being "ignored" are, as in real life, blissfully unaware of how much they are disliked. wink

...but I'm glad you took me off "ignore." laugh

I have seen two threads today based solely on the existence of Gyro?

Trolls should be banned. It will save having to upgrade the forum software to have this ignore feature.

They are usually warned, but if they don't change their ways they are then banned.

Every once in a while we get an exceptionally talented troll - they disappear quickly. laugh
