Passed away unexpectedly of heart failure after performing the Shostokovich 2nd Piano Concerto in Vancouver, in which he finished to the end, but barely rose from the piano stool. Doctors later diagnosed acute heart failure.

Astonishing fortitude. Nearly age 70, a tragic loss of this Georgian born American artist.

Golly -- both of these two pianists that you just posted about were silver medalists in the Cliburn competition.
(in consecutive runnings:
Toradze 1966, Nojima 1969)

....all in addition to the recent passing of Radu Lupu, the winner in 1966.

One of my past teachers was in that 1966 event (before I knew him), so I notice big-time the names of the contestants from around then.

Thanks for posting that article.

How can we not love this:

While he was a student in Moscow, Mr. Toradze listened to illicit broadcasts of the Voice of America program “Jazz Hour.” To him, he said, jazz represented artistic freedom. When performing in Portland, Ore., during a Soviet-sponsored tour in 1978, he learned that Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson were to perform twice the next day. Much to the irritation of his manager, he decided to skip a rehearsal in Miami to attend the concerts. Ms. Fitzgerald invited him onstage, where he told her that she was a “goddess for people in the Soviet Union.”

(Well I guess his manager didn't love it....) ha
