I'm surprised he's known at all in PW, as the only person who's ever mentioned his name here (usually in the same breath as Boulez, or Bach whistle) is.......me.

I remember his Panic caused, er, panic at the BBC Proms. Some people booed, others applauded loudly to drown out the booers. His operas have been shown on BBC TV, and I sometimes watch them with the sound, er, off if the cacophony becomes too wearing on my sensitive ears.

But 'his' Clocks (as in Harrison's Clocks) are worth a listen, and even a sight-read (- beats Einaudi any time):

"I don't play accurately - anyone can play accurately - but I play with wonderful expression. As far as the piano is concerned, sentiment is my forte. I keep science for Life."

I saw "Gawain" with the great Sir John Tomlinson. Not really my sort of music, but an impressive production. But I came away feeling shellshocked - as if I had been inside a metal can on which people were hammering for two hours. I thought the word "relentless" described it.

Some time later I saw "The Minotaur". I was somewhat surprised - here at last was a Birtwistle opera which I understood musically, which formed a drama. I am not sure that "enjoyed" would be quite the right word, but I felt that it had been a rewarding evening. There was however a "but"... All the characters were so cold, as personalities. There was not one that I warmed to or felt for.
