Following up on the thread about finding a small and lightweight travelling keyboard, my decision has nearly landed on the irig keys i/o 49.

I wonder if anyone has any personal experience with it. I will mainly be using it with its piano voice when travelling just to have "something" to play and practice on, and without any of the integration with mac/pc/ios apps (that's just an added bonus)
Most reviews seem to focus more on the software part, and not how it actually feels and sounds when playing it. And those who do demonstrate some playing, use the software's voice rather than the audio output directly from the keyboard.

How are the keys, the touch response and quality of the built in piano voice, compared to other keyboards?

I also wonder if any pianists have any general experience with a 49 key keyboard and if it is very limiting. I understand that some would say to never play on anything with less than 88 keys, but some compromises have to be made. At my skill level I am not really playing anything with such a wide span, with the exception of maybe some 8va/8vb practice pieces.

There is no built in sounds on the iKeys FYI. It does have a built in audio interface with good ASIO drivers if on Windows side. The sounds in the software are fine for what you're trying to do IMHO.

I will add that I use it for sketching around with my 2n1 Flex Laptop and for me it works for my needs. On the laptop I use Mixcraft Pro Audio 9 DAW that comes with enough software virtual instruments to keep me happy and entertained. I also have TruePianos and Pianoteq for my piano sounds plus a few more goodies. Really you have to start somewhere so pick one just go with it. I admit I picked IO49 because it came with the full version of Sampletank Max on a promotional offer a couple of years ago.

Peace

Ah, that's a bummer. I thought the headphone jack and RCA outputs were for audio, and that this was what made the device stand out from the others that did not have an audio output. Now it makes more sense why every product reviewer focuses on the software side of it and not on the product as a stand alone device.

What are those outputs for then? Is it seen as a generic USB sound card in windows, so it will play anything running on the desktop?

I was hoping for something portable that would let me play without connecting to a laptop or other device. Maybe not the end of the world as I always bring my laptop with me, but I'll have to do some more research first before deciding.
