It's Fun to Play the Piano ... Please Pass It On!
I am looking for a solo piano recording of Willow Weep For Me to transcribe. There is a John Lewis recording that isn't bad but it's not quite grabbing me and I am not going to mess with the Art Tatum version haha. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I was experimenting with that tune a couple of years ago. I was just gathering arrangement ideas at the time and not looking to transcribe, so I just used some CDs that I had with some good piano as part of a group setting. My favorite was Dizzy Gillespie. The Ray Bryant Trio had some good piano in it also, but it was too elaborate for my skill.
This was my Dad's favourite tune. Lovely versions, though I own the Marian McPartland Maybeck album, so know it well. She's under-rated in my view and one of the best ever British Jazz Pianists.
I also have to mention her series NPR radio series, Piano Jazz, which ran for 33 years. This is a not to missed opportunity to hear many of the greatest Jazz Pianists (Brubeck, Corea, Evans, Peterson to name but 4), playing solo and duets, and discuss their craft with her.
Cheers

This was my first jazz influence Nadine and she was on Marion show on January 13 1988. I remember the night she showed up at my house about 1 am in the morning and started to play the piano then about 45 minutes later she pulled out a flugehorn horn and started to play both. Then she started to sing. What a talent https://www.npr.org/2014/03/21/292388653/nadine-jansen-on-piano-jazz
These are not solo piano but I thought you might want to hear them for some ideas
Sorry I've been extremely busy the past month and haven't checked back in with this thread. I have checked out both the Wynton Kelly and Jan Johansson recordings. When I have time next weekend I'll listen to the other recordings that dpvjazz and cudo posted. Thanks to all of you for your help! This is a wonderful community!
