Hi All,
A little bit of a conundrum here. When i order from Mapes they recommend 1 Twist of the winding. I know many that do 2 twists. I compromised and do 1 twist on the unichords, and two twists on the bi-chords. I just ordered a set from Heller for the first time, and was a bit surprised that he recommends 2 twists on the Unichords and 1 twist on the bi-chords(opposite what is was doing).
Can anyone explain all the different recommendations and why one would be preferred over the other.
Thanks in advance.
-chris

Interesting question. Barney Unwin, bass string maker in England, told me in response to my enquiry in 2020:

Quote
Hi David,

If it’s a bottom single string then one whole turn is required, but only half a turn for a thinner bichord string. The very thinnest strings under 1.50mm don't need twisting at all. You can twist from either end as long as its in the correct direction for that string.

I was also surprised about that, however the strings sound great. When I inquired he simply said follow the directions.
