Hi all,

I received an email this morning that's obviously a scam (for starters, the actual sender's address is gobbledygook), offering a free piano:

Quote
I hope this mail finds you well. I am looking to give away my late husband’s piano to a loving home, music school, church or Museum. It is a Yamaha Baby Grand GC1 model, Please let me know if you will take it or have someone who will care for it.

I'm definitely not going to respond but I started wondering where the sender got my name, and thought perhaps it could have been through here. Has anyone else gotten something like this lately?

Respectfully,
Jim

I have, in my case a Bosendorfer 225, a little more appetizing than this GC1. A strange, very niche scam. What does the scammer hope to gain? The victim paying for shipping for a non-existent piano?

Yes, probably something like that, or wire transfer/bank account information.

I'm disappointed I only got an offer for a Yamaha. Can I have the Bosendorfer if you're not going to take it?

You might want to remove your e-mail address from your profile. smile

grin grin grin

Re the scam, I've seen them on FB piano-related groups.

It is indeed, as Rob said, a strange, very niche scam.

Haha!

I'm quite partial to Yamahas, but they might have to pay me to take a GC1.

Does removing your email address from your profile prevent you from receiving emailed alerts from PianoWorld when you have a PM waiting?

There are two places to store an email address in your profile.
The first is for the type of communication you mentioned.

Lower on the page is a place to enter a "Publicly displayed Email Address."
You'll want to leave the latter blank.

No, you will still receive PM notifications as your e-mail will be retained internally by the system. Your e-mail will no longer be publicly visible.

Your e-mail should remain in your profile, the box for publicly displayed e-mail should be blank,

Thanks for the helpful advice, everyone! I've checked, and my 'publicly displayed' email box is blank ... Phew!

I've just read the very sad news that a friend of mine in another country, who has learning diffcultlies and is a lot more trusting, has paid $790 AU in response to this very scam in order to have the non-existent piano moved.

The "owner" of the piano pretends to be a lady in deep mourning who just wants to have the piano moved to make her life easier, and claims her husband wanted the piano to go to a musician or music student.

Of course, there is no piano. To those of us who can spot a scam very easily this sounds ridiculous, but there are vulnerable people out there who are willing to pay up.
