The Pratt Reed grand piano action in my 1969 Sohmer Model 57 has an interesting green shiny coating on the tip of the jack where it meets the knuckle. There is even some on the repetition levers where the knuckle meets the knuckle. Curious to if this was added during the manufacturing process as an antifriction substance or if it may have been added later? Was this a common practice of Pratt Reed? Also it appears that graphite was used on the knuckles. Should I stay with graphite or could I switch to teflon powder. If so, do I need to clean-off the graphite first? I also used a firm new toothbrush to brush the leather on the knuckles as the leather appeared to be original and compressed.

My apologies... I meant to say where the knuckle rests on the repetition lever.

That green coating is called "Emralon" and was widely used for years. I believe it is no longer available in the form used then. It usually holds up quite well though over time.

P W Grey,
Thank you for your response and the link you provided. It appears that the "Emralon" has held up over the past 53 years!
