My 1916 Weber has a similar rebuild, all new strings, pins, hammers, shanks, flanges, whippens, but the original soundboard and pin block. I trust the rebuilder, my technician has also had praise for it. I would not worry.

While it is interesting and encouraging to read that there are pianos that are 100 years old and older with still good soundboards, how are those observations relevant to the piano in question? I would think that it still needs to be examined by a reputable technician to determine the condition of the soundboard on this particular piano.

Well of course, as I said, I scheduled it for Thursday. I placed down an offer because I checked it myself first, not only the board and the ribs don’t have any detachment, there wasn’t any cracks on board either (honestly I didn’t even see any shimming done, but I can definitely be wrong in that one)

Regards, I believe the inspection of the M & H is scheduled for tomorrow

Horray, it is official, I am getting this new piano.
The tech say every thing is in great condition from the pin block (original, did not replace), soundboard, action and everything else. On top of all, he was able to help me negotiate a 10 year warranty from 5 years. Pictures will follow soon.
The rebuilt is of excellent quality with Renner parts too.
Question for piano techs, if the pins are no.3 how much larger can they before you have to replace the block.

I don’t believe we have heard the results of the inspection.

Regards, Exactly. The inspection was already planned and scheduled. The OP had only made a Down payment , contingent on the outcome.

The Mason and Hamlin BB is perhaps my favorite piano. But i would not buy a rebuilt one with an original board at that price. The reason is that the tension resonator makes the rim sooo stiff and immobile that they suffer from severe cracking. Yes, they can still sound good, but i really think it lowers their resale value. Plus with all those cracks, it makes the rib and rim joints less secure. And longevity suspect. If it had a new board for that price then it would be a good deal.

Most tuners hate tuning large pins, so after 3 usually a new block is called for. There is a lo-torque pin option, but those don't seem too popular, perhaps because they are very pricey. A new block solves many problems.

The answer depends on how you care for it environmentally. VERY STABLE humidity equates to many years. UNSTABLE AND FLUCTUATING equates to few years.

I think this is a great price and trade in value if it passes a thorough tech inspection.
