There is a BIG difference between HDD and SDD, particularly if using external. That alone can explain the pops. About SSDs there are certainly differences between models, but I use a cheap generic usb3 external drive with good results.

Haven't you bought a new mac? That comes with an internal ssd, so no need for an external ssd (at least for the moment). On the other hand, you old mac with an external ssd may still be good enough.

HDDs must spin up physical platters using motors before the head can even read data. For a laptop, most HDDs spin down after a few seconds to save battery. So it makes perfect sense that part of the issue you are experiencing is HDD sleep/wake.

You can try to see if there are any settings that allow you to prevent the HDD from sleeping?

Hey so I got an external sandask ssd for garritan and I would say it performs way better than my other hdd. It only crackles occasionally but sometimes it doesn’t show any disk loss when it crackles but sometimes it does. After laying for some time something I noticed was that for some reason the “queued” number next to disk percentage just stays at 184. Idk what this means or if it has anything to do with the occasional crackles.

IIRC, "queued" just goes up to whatever RAM you have allocated and stays there. Makes sense, in that once it's loaded up a sample into RAM, there's zero reason to flush it as it might be needed again.

Yea so my new computer came and garritan works flawlessly. But my midi keyboard still locks at 48000 sample rate which is odd. I connected my airpods to my Mac and it locks at 48000 as well. This doesn’t really bother me anymore but it’s just really odd to me.
