I can only imagine the loss and the feeling of devastation the fire must cause, but that will be only a vague approximation of your reality. There are no words, but the sincere hope that, somehow, some way, life will eventually resume for you and your wife.

Most sincerely,

So sorry to hear this, Peyton. My heart goes out to you and your family.

I used to tell my late mother, when something around her house would break, tear up or need repair, "mom, anything man made can be fixed or replaced". But I know in this situation, that does not make it any easier for you.

You all are in my thoughts and prayers, my friend.

Hi, we have never met but i wish i could do something to alleviate your situation. I can only imagine your pain right now. I wish you the best, also to your wife, and to your cats if there's any chance they could escape.

Thank you all so much. I never expected such an overwhelming response of love and warmth. I see all these names Iโ€™ve known for so long and it just makes me want to cryโ€ฆ and Iโ€™ve done a lot of that lately. To those of you emailing and private messaging about a go- fundโ€ฆ thank you so much but we are ok money wise. We may have been left with nothing but the shirts on our backs but fortunately we do have money in the bank and excellent insurance. And all of youโ€ฆ thank you for your kind words about my compositions. I know Iโ€™m just a two bit hack on the piano but it really has been a major part of my life and posting here on the forum has been my one real outlet. And you all have always been there for me and for each other. I know you all feel the same way but you donโ€™t really appreciate it until itโ€™s gone.

This is truly ghastly news and my thoughts are with you. Thank goodness you weren't in the house when it happened. It will take a while but I am sure you and your music will continue.

Sorry to hear. Always difficult to start over during the holidays when you should be celebrating. Thank God your family is ok.

Music is such a stress relief I wouldn't do without it. Not much you can do about your piano at the moment. However, you might settle for a cheap 88 keyboard. Once you put your life back together you can start playing again.

Peyton, I am at a loss of words. I am so sorry to hear this. How heartbreaking to drive to your house and then see fifteen fire trucks battling the fire. I am so sorry about the cats. And thankful for the fortunate circumstance that you were not there, and that you are well insured. But still...

Playing the piano is learning to create, playfully and deeply seriously, our own music in the world.

I don't post much here, Peyton, but I am incredibly sorry to learn about this. Your OP broke my heart. Your declining financial assistance speaks to the sort of person you are.

This community clearly values you. I sincerely hope you get back to this forum - and back to the piano - when it feels right to you.

Wishing you all the best.

Jon

My heart goes out to you, Peyton. You and your wife are in my thoughts and prayers and I don't expect to console you.

A Beethoven composition or a Da Vinci cartoon are art treasures for the world. My art teacher once told me to never throw away sketches but I no longer value this advice. Neither my recordings nor my drawings ever mattered. It was what I did, not what I made - the process, not the product.

The material things, while we value them, are only tokens of their real worth, not as things but of what we do with them and what we associate with them. You're still you without those things and when this momentous upheaval begins to subside, as it will, you will still have your creativity and you'll continue to express it some way.

Our dog, Max, passed away this morning. While I cannot share your situation I can in some small way share your grief. God be with you.

Dear Peyton,
I am so sorry to hear your news.
I can only imagine how overwhelming this is and to be grieving for your cats as well......it's more than anything I have had to deal with.

True, things are just things, and you can replace them....on the other hand replacing everything at once is not something you expect to have to do.

I am so glad that you and your wife are safe, and that your insurance is excellent. I hope there will be a way for music to help you through this.
You are in my thoughts and prayers as you recover from this blow.

Peyton -

I have lived out of a suitcase and in hotels for years. Some tips that worked for me, noting that Global pandemic limits your flexibility considerably:

- A small hotel or apartment with even a basic kitchen is very livable. So much more comfortable than any hotel room or suite.

- Eating out gets old...fast. Too much fat, salt, and sugar.

- You could look at corporate apartments or houses; they are expensive but have some basic level of quality and cleaning service.

- You could look online for places like Airbnb or Vrbo. Early on, we rented some incredible places. More recently, it seems that a few corporations and people buy rotten houses and marginally update them. We had some disappointing experiences to be honest.

- You could contact a real estate agent to help with short-term rentals; maybe you can find a place with a piano AND an art studio. I bet there are a lot of houses in Maine for summer that are 4-season insulated but unoccupied.

- When traveling around Europe and Asia, I changed places every few days. The logistics were a bit time consuming but with only a suitcase not that bad. You may not need to live in your "prior" neighborhood, unless you need to coordinate rebuilding the house (if so you need to be on top of the contractor daily else it will drag out for a long time).

Mr. PianoWorld rents rooms in Maine. I think that might be fun for a week (or maybe more).

We, too, experienced the trauma of losing our home to fire. It is a nightmare to experience but I'm happy you're uninjured. Our fire happened in 2008 and we were asleep when it started. Our German Shepherd Dog wakened us and we got out without injury. It took us a year to rebuild but it was a difficult and painful time. I wrote an article published in Qualitative Inquiry that captures some of my grief. In our rebuilding, I replaced my piano with a beautiful Grotrian grand and it brings joy. Sending you prayers and good wishes. Karen
