Hi,

I thought I could ask here before I make a decision
A Hobart Cable piano is being gifted to me . They say it is in good condition and only needs tuning every few months.
Serial number is 580678 which I couldnt find online.
Is this a good deal? How much that piano worth and how long before it will give up?

Thanks!

I don't know of that piano, can't comment on the quality of it.
I find the comment " only needs tuning every few months " interesting!

Why is it interesting? Is there something wrong with that? They said the piano is probably about 50 years old. I dont have much experience so I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Most pianos in private households only get tuned once a year, or even less frequently. If a piano is being tuned every few months, either the owner is very particular about keeping it on pitch, or it loses its tuning rather too fast.

According to the serial numbers on this site, the piano was built in 1979. That doesn't tell us anything about its condition, though. The only way to find out more about that is to ask a qualified piano technician to take a look at it. That costs a little bit, but it's worth it before making a decision whether to accept or not: are you getting a super deal, or are you being saddled with something worthless?

Hi Safina,

Sorry, I should've elaborated! Basically what MRC just said. Very few pianos owned by private individuals probably get tuned even once a year!
Maybe it was just a passing phrase the owner made and nothing was really meant by it?

However, if a piano in a house did actually NEED to be tuned every few months then its probably not worth it.

Good Luck

That serial number does not correspond to numbers in the Piano Atlas, but it said that the company was bought by Story & Clark, and that number would be for a Story & Clark about 1980. It is probably not a bad piano. There is a possibility it was made by Charles Walter, but the number does not match their numbers exactly. If it were, then it would be about 45" tall, which is good in itself. In any case, it is worth considering. An evaluation by a technician would probably be worthwhile if you are serious about it.

The usual recommendation is to just have it inspected, but with gifts that can be a little awkward (like looking a gift horse in the mouth). If it seems nice and reasonably in tune to you, then all you have at risk is the cost of the move (and perhaps disposal if you don’t like it). Also, if it goes out of tune quickly, there are some reasonable remedies to tighten the pins (e.g. CA glue), as long as it’s not too bad.
