The music for this movie is for me, mindbogglingly, unbelievably, fantastically beautiful (like the animation).

As close to perfection as I've ever heard, MOST especially the piano. The tone, the tuning, all of it. Of course there was studio sweetening post-recording I know, but still.

The music was composed by Joe Hisaishi and performed by the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, but I cannot find what make/model of piano was used.

I would be ever so truly grateful to learn what piano was used for that soundtrack!!!

I poked around online and some Japanese-language websites say that his personal piano is a Steinway, but I would guess that whether he played a S&S for the soundtrack would depend on any contractual obligations that Studio Ghibli had or that New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra had...

Separate from that, I wonder how much it matters, given that there would be so much after-processing on the ultimate soundtrack....

Separate from that, are you a fan of Hisaishi specifically, or more of Studio Ghibli/anime music? (I am a huge fan of Hisaishi!)

I’m a fan since Nausicaä was released… I was 5 at the time and highly influenced my decision to learn piano. Hisaishi is a genius ☺️

Discovered Hisaishi thru Ghibli films, huge fan ever since.

At 6:05 in, S&S clear on side of what I assume (but could be wrong about) is New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra's house piano.

Hmmm, well that certainly seems to increase the likelihood that Hisaishi played a S&S in the recording...

This is Joe Hisaishi performing music from Mononoke Hime (aka Princess Mononoke-- one of my favorite films!) on a Steinway

I think the Ghibli films masterpieces and the soundtracks are a big part of the movie experience.

I think an obligation to use some particular piano brand for studio recording is rather unlikely in this case. Steinway is a safe bet.
