I know there are several methods, but i made a video of the Fandrich Rhodes method of analyzing a grand piano action. So you can see it how it works as there were no other video demonstrations.

Enjoy!

Hi Emery,
Here are some tips that I wish i had when i first got mine. Thumbing through the directions can be a bit overwhelming at first.

* Aim for 3 weights in each key max in the bass. Section up (3,2,1,0) until zero weights in treble. This will force you in many cases to select the proper action ratio.

* The Goal is to get an even upweight (25 grams feels good). This will force you to get friction under control to lower the downweight. Friction 15g in bass 10g in treble. BTW, the Stanwood system gives an uneven upweight line.

* Know your preferences. Unfortunately this will take time. Mine are Low action ratio (5.2 or 5.3), that will result in a 10.4 keydip. The ITF between 210 and 230. BTW i measured a few Fandrich actions and that was also their numbers. The best actions i ever played on were Darrell Fandrichs, they melted under your fingers and it was a thing to behold. Silky smooth. I am still trying to get to the level of his. But i'm close.

The amazing thing of this system of course is that you can share numbers and know exactly the feel after one has enough experience under their belt.
Good Luck,
-chris
