I haven't had sardines since I was a kid. It was fishing food - when my dad took me fishing, we had sardines. Also potted meat, beanie-weenies, and vienna sausages. If it was a special fishing trip, spam...

Sam

Now you are talking real southern cuisine, Sam!! smile

Years ago, my brother-in-law ate too many vienna sausages and had an allergic reaction and they had to take him to the hospital. He said is had just started a low carbohydrate diet. smile

Does anchovies on pizza count? Forget that thought the thought of that is just as unappetizing. I think I'll just practice an extra hour.

Sardines. Delicious, nutritious little fishes.

Instead of sardines I use Omega-3 capsules.

But they don't make me a great pianist. 😉

There was a time when we ate sardines twice a week. And we got so fed up. Imagine a can of sardines every day. Oh horror.
Just like clothearednincompo, we take Omega-3 capsules every day. And just like clothearednincompo, it doesn't make me a great pianist...

Perhaps Philip, if you eat enough sardines, you may finally conquer 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'.

Over the last several years I've been trying to eat healthier, exercise and lose weight. I did take the Omega 3 fish-oil supplement for a while, along with other dietary supplements.

I've lost over 50 lbs. and I actually thought it made me a better piano player; but I've decided it just made me healthier and better looking, and I mistook that for being a better piano player. smile

For me, the important question I am trying to answer personally, is which food that I am not consuming now, if I start consuming it, will most likely trigger a similar placebo effect for me?

Chocolate cures everything and makes you as smart as Einstein.

I do believe that sardines are really good for you and for most people, and that increasing Omega 3 fatty acid consumption would help most people. There are amazing studies out there regarding the effect of certain fats on thinking and even combating or helping to prevent alzheimers.

It is also funny to think that eating a can of sardines every day will make you a better pianist, even if it is true! Still funny. Your methodolgy for trying to find out if this is more than correlation might require a few more cans of sardines to help get it worked out. smile

ZeroZero, your thread has merit, and definitely something to think about and consider. Please don't take offence at the humor or jokes that have been shared. I think when the forum activity on PW gets pretty slow, we may try to find a little humor here and there, just to keep things going.

Actually, I think a little humor is good for us as well. Besides, some of us are actually thinking about buying some sardines next time we go to the supermarket.

All the best!

Rick

To add to the culinary side of things, for those who have only ever had sardines from a can, fresh grilled sardines are a totally different kettle of fish (sorry, couldn’t resist) and well worth the effort. Here’s a recipe from Mark Bittman, but there are plenty of similar recipes around!
https://www.markbittman.com/recipes-1/grilled-sardines-with-lemon-and-thyme

On the ‘warning’ side, as Retsacnal indicated, sardines (and a lot of other seafood) are high in purines, which get metabolized to uric acid. So if you have gout or kidney problems, I would definitely be judicious in sardine consumption.

Well while you are eating chocolate, life is bliss.Who would need to be creative in those moments? The association of chocolate and sardines is Urrrrr 😫 So please let's not talk of chocolate and sardines.

We use sardines down here in the Southeast as bait to catch grouper. Never thought of eating them especially out of a can. The only fish I eat are the ones I catch and fresh out of the cooler. I think any oily fish has a lot of omega 3. I sometimes catch Spanish Mackerel. Those are good freshly caught oily fish blackened on a hot grill.
