Hi everyone,

I am collecting some information in regard to cleaning digital pianos/midi controllers. I have a project at school and I will be designing a specialised cleaning device for these instruments to ensure that the keyboard, and the electronics are as dust free as possible to prevent potential damage when dust gets clogged up in between those keys which are hard to clean.

I just would like to ask and it would be great if you could participate by filling out the survey I’ve created to aid in my research. All participants will be anonymous. If you are in the age range of 18-60 and own a digital piano/ midi controller, I am grateful if you could spend a few minutes to help in my studies. Thanks!

If you have the chance to edit the survey, and you find it in any way helpful to getting a higher response rate and more useful results, here are the reasons why I will not be filling it out:

1. Consenting to the second attached form seems intrusive and does not clearly match the e-survey statement.
2. I am required to specify my age, though you give participants the right to withhold disclosure of their gender. Be consistent.
3. Item 4 should probably include “hybrid”.
4. Item 5 should have more choices. Some people only use their pianos occasionally. I would figure ascertaining the presence of absence of a dust cover would be a more important question, or whether the piano keyboard or entire instrument is kept covered, when not in use!
5. Item 6 should include common choices like a disposable duster, and a cloth or paper towel wet with liquid.
6. Item 7 is just lazy- it feels like you’re asking the participant to do your work for you. Also it’s going to generate potentially unhelpful data that will be harder to group.
7. Item 9 does not have enough choices.
8. Item 10 is fairly disorganized and assumes a level of technical knowledge that most of us don’t have in terms of understanding the root cause of specific problems.
9. Item 11 asks a yes or no question and also requires a numerical response. It should be two questions.
10. Item 13 doesn’t specify how much time and effort the user would need to undertake, which makes it difficult to answer.

You might want to add a question about the age of the device. Mine is very new so I have not yet experienced any issues.

Why is question 6 a typed answer and not radio buttons? I do not know if I'm supposed to answer "Yes" or "No". Or maybe "Entire Instrument" or "keyboard"? Or "Sometimes"?

Question 7 could include "My current method of cleaning is fine for me." That will tell you what the market potential is.

Question 8 is mandatory but my answer would be "None yet". I'd have to write that in "Other" whereas having that as a selection might be easier to tabulate.

Question 8 is a radio button and only one thing can be selected. I should be able to pick ALL of the issues I experienced. That may tell you what areas your device should concentrate on.

In question 11, what does this mean? "The device will have a sensor to indicate when it has been cleaned. " What device? My digital piano or your tool?

I found the cost question interesting. I answered it "Good question. As I've aged I value convenience over cost. A whole room air cleaner that would handle the room where the piano is costs about $100 US and eliminates the dust etc. on everything."

Which posed the question of whether a whole room air filter for a home user would be "good enough" for most individuals and provide other benefits. If so, that is the cost you're competing with.

A specialized tool as you're proposing necessarily has a limited audience. Your target market might actually be music stores with many devices on display, each one needing individually cleaned. .

What do other people think the target customer is for such a device?
