Recital #64 is now open for submissions!

Ready to submit your performance? Go here: recitals.pianoworld.com

Deadline: 6:00 am US EASTERN TIME on November 15th, 2021.

New to the recitals? Read on:
The recital will be posted sometime on the 15th of November, which means that submissions must be in by 6:00 am US Eastern Time, November 15th. Please note this deadline is very firm; I cannot start working on the recital until it is closed, and once it is closed, no new entries can be added.

While any and all styles of music are welcome, we do ask that it be piano related. Only one recording may be submitted per forum member (although that recording may consist of a medley of two or more very short related pieces).

Editing or digital alteration of your performance (other than minor edits such as trimming long silences at the end or beginning of the piece) is counter to the 'live recital' spirit of the AB Forum Recital and is thus strongly discouraged. In any event, any editing should be disclosed in the "additional information" section of the recital submission template.

If you are fairly new to the piano, please do not be intimidated by some of the talent here in the ABF. We all consider ourselves to be beginners even though we may have been playing for some time. And, we LOVE to hear recordings from folks new to the keyboard. So even if you're on your first Alfred's method book, we would *really* enjoy hearing from you.

Recital submissions must be in MP3 format. The maximum size of the file is 20 MB. Videos are optional, and must be hosted elsewhere - you will supply the link.

If you are new to recording your music, there are several threads in the forum archives that address the ways and means. Audacity is an excellent free recording application that can be used.

Submitting Your Recording:

You will upload your mp3 file to the recital server as part of the recital submission process.

When you have your mp3 file ready, go to:recitals.pianoworld.com

and follow the instructions there. Please note that the software does not cope well with international characters, so please convert any such characters to standard American characters. Once you have uploaded your info to the automated recital software, you will receive a confirmation e-mail. You will have the opportunity to revise your submission any time up until the deadline. If you have any problems at all using the website, or if you do not receive a confirmation e-mail within a few hours, just PM me (Sam S). If you have not participated in past recitals using this software, I strongly encourage you to submit your recital piece at least a day in advance in case you run into any problems with it.

The recital website uses the following submission template to be filled out along with your attached music file. You may want to have your responses to these fields prepared in advance so all you have to do is cut and paste:

Performer's Name: {forum ID and real name if you'd like}
Where you are located: {optional}
Avatar image link: {optional}
Experience: {Yrs/Mos of piano playing experience}
Link to YouTube or other video: {optional}
Home page link: {optional}
Title of piece/composer:
Source of music: {sheet music, improvised score, play-by-ear, etc}
Instrument used: {Piano make, keyboard model, etc.}
Recording method: {audacity, Zoom, digital to PC, etc.}
Constructive technical feedback wanted: {Yes/No}
Additional Info: {Your thoughts on the piece, what you had for lunch, etc.}

The due date for all submissions is 6:00 am US EASTERN TIME on November 15th, 2021.

By submitting a piece to the recital, you are certifying that it is a recording of your own performance.

Again, the recital will be presented in the order the pieces were received, so the sooner you send in your piece, the higher you will be on the list! You can revise your entries on the template (e.g., thoughts about your piece, adding YouTube links, and the like) any time and not lose your place in the recital queue, but if you resubmit your recording at any time, for any reason, you will be bumped to the end of the list.

Should you have any questions at all on what to do or how to do it, do not hesitate to ask. Remember, there are NO stupid questions, as we have a steady flow of new members in AB Forum for whom this is their first recital, so your questions will probably help to eliminate other member's problems.

Looking forward to hearing the recital!

Sam

Please also notice the new comment policy. You can request 4 different levels of comments:

- No Comments Please!
- Polite Comments only: no suggestions for improvement please.
- General Comments only: Polite, supportive, suggestions for improvement.
- Critical Comments: Anything goes!

The default is:
- General Comments only: Polite, supportive, suggestions for improvement.

I think they choices are fairly clear. Make sure that you select the one that you really want. Of course, you can change your mind by updating your submission (without losing your place in line) anytime up to the deadline.

Of course, requesting comments does not mean that you will get any (or even one). Please remember to thank those people who take the time to comment on your performance.

Sam, in your message there is no URL to recitals.pianoworld.com. I hope people understand that they need to copy and paste recitals.pianoworld.com to a new tab in their browser.

After a longer time off, I'm glad I noticed the recital going on! :-) I've already submitted mine. I can't wait to hear all the other music, it will be a musical feast as always.

Oh gosh... can I submit just the beginning of something, recorded on an out-of-tune piano? grin

I wasn't exactly happy making the final recording at home with a cheap keyboard since I don't have a piano. Normally I'd go to the community center where the uprights are used for lessons (the teachers keep them in tune) or the conservatory where my lessons are held. But both places have restrictions on public access.

I couldn't find a playable piano arrangement for this piece. While spending a few months out of town visiting relatives, I used a flimsy travel keyboard to do most of the arranging from an orchestral score to the final piano version. Had to retest the chords & fingerings with the regular keyboard at home to make sure the different phrases are playable.

At least I got a reasonable video & audio recording... a lot of stress off my shoulders...

Anything is fine - just explain in the additional comments what you have done - this is a very forgiving crowd.

I'm so disappointed I had no time to practise and submit my Beethoven piece for the Beginner Pieces Recital, but at least I'm back for the quarterly one with my silly video game music.

Looking forward to hearing everyone's hard work again!

You shouldn't be listening before the recital goes live. Takes all the fun out of it!

How is this even possible to listen to these pieces before the recital goes live?

You can look at the URLs from past recitals and then attempt to figure out what the current recital is. I think Q brought this up before, but I didn't think you can listen to the mp3. If someone posted a youtube link, then you could look at that.

Presumably, the current recital will appear as:

Recital #64

But that link is not active at this moment in time.

People who learned computer programming in the past would think logically. When you submit a sound recording as .mp3, you get assigned a file name as a number such as #7320.mp3 to check if your recording sounds ok. Assuming all the submissions are in order, the person before you would have #7319.mp3 and the person after would have #7321 sort of thing.

What about the name of the piece? It's "unofficially" released by Sam in an above post showing the first 20 entries. You can look under the person's YouTube username if it is the same as the account name here for a video of the piece if the privacy setting is "Public".

The 1 thing that can be changed to make the recordings more private is to use the file name the person uploaded as the name of the recording. To keep the recording in the sequence it was submitted, a number can be attached to the beginning. For instance: the soundtrack submitted was "chop-noc9.mp3" and it's the 3rd entry. The assigned name of the file online would be "003-chop-noc9.mp3". People can easily figure out the 1st submission would start with "001" and goes up sequentially but what comes after can be in short-form in different combination of letters & numbers so would be harder to figure out. My entry would be "019-bach-christmas2-sinfonia.mp3" which is much harder to figure out before the link is provided after the online recital is closed.

As someone who studied computer programming, I found a way to see the page with all current submissions in clickable form :-)

I don't have terminal access and I'm not wasting my time changing the code so you can't sneak around and listen before the recital goes "live".

Why would you even want to? What's the point? Other than to prove that you can...

I agree. I just want to clarify that I did not go there to listen to them early. I just got curious after hearing what thepianoplayer416 said and went to check if it was indeed possible.

I think you can put a token index.php as an easy fix.
