Question/Advice

I recently purchased a rebuilt/refurbished Model A from 1912
The Piano Dealer is very very good, they are an Mason & Hamlin Dealer
The main rebuild was done in 1996, but the refurb was expertly done my the M&H Dealer.

Should I be having my piano Tuned & Fine Tuned by a Steinway Expert Tuner
or is any Expert Tuner ok?

I get the feeling from what I am reading around that Steinway's sometime have their own special issues
and that Tuners who work mostly on Steinway's know exactly how to deal with them?

I have fixed work done by many a "Steinway Technician," including technicians sent from the factory.

I suppose I am a Steinway Technician, since I have an account with them, but it is fairly easy for any established technician to get accounts with manufacturers. The only tests are economic, not tests of ability.

The typical well-known issues concerning Steinways--broken agraffes, verdigris, noisy pitmans, and teflon bushings--should be familiar to most experienced technicians.

That leaves tuning. I've generally found that Steinways in good condition (not old, worn-out ones with rusty strings) don't present any tuning issues. You don't need a Steinway tech to tune yours, just someone with experience and diligence.

It's like suggesting that you have to take your Toyota to the dealer for an oil change.

You state that the refurb was expertly done [sic]my the M&H Dealer.
I remember reading other posts of yours about how happy you were with the instrument and (presumably) how it was tuned/voiced/regulated when you got it. Personally, I would take these things as evidence that at least one of their technicians is capable of servicing your Steinway.
I would also suggest that "Expert Tuner" is too narrow a term.
May I suggest "Expert Technician"?
Ideally such an individual, at least as a generalist, would be able to tune, voice and regulate your piano. Some "technicians" are going to be better at some aspects of what is involved in servicing. You might think of them as "specialists" that can be called when your PPT (primary piano technician... he said, inventing the term and riffing of PCP in the medical field) feels that you are better served by someone with specific expertise required for some non-routine task.

My opinion.

There are people who are "addicted" to name dropping and see some advantage to being known as a SS technician. If they're good, they're good. If they're not...it doesn't matter what label they put on themselves. This business is rife with insecure people trying to one-up everyone else.

In the end you need to try them out. If you like em use em.
