I know this topic comes up all the time, so apologies in advance!

I am pretty much ready to get a better bench (but not the $700-1000 kind, unfortunately). The CPS options seem the best in terms of my budget and their reputation.

I was going to get the K13 model, which is the one that covers the mechanism when you raise it all the way, but it only goes up to like 19 or 19.5 inches, and my current seat height is 21.5. Which, as it happens, is the max height on two other models, the E17 and the B102. But I think you can see the mechanism when raised with these two. (links below)

Does anyone have one of these and would be willing to raise it all the way up and take a photo for me?

So, I would prefer something that doesn't show the mechanism so much, if possible. Esp. since I will need to have ti raised almost the whole way....

I'm also now considering one of the hydraulic options...

Perhaps you can place a cloth skirt around the bench to hide the mechanism?

Skirt would be the easiest solution. Otherwise hydraulics are your only options.

Well, the other option is the imported bench that Jansen sells, here's one for $365:

For comparison, I would have to pay over $800 for a real Jansen artist bench (bc I'd have to add $50 for high gloss, $50 for longer legs, since their standard legs only raise to 21")

Hmm... I think I will sleep on it... And maybe make a new thread to see if anyone has purchased one of these non-Jansen benches sold from Jansen.

ETA: I wondered if the CPS benches are made by the same company as the imported benches that Jansen sells, but if they are, the options are not the same. For example, the CPS bench options do not include one that has a skirt that covers the mechanism and that raises high enough for me.

I recall a recent thread started by someone looking at JansenPianoBenches.com, and the result seemed to be that this is a distributing company, but the benches are not necessarily manufactured by Jansen. How they get the name of Jansen was not explained.

You might want to check this out further, as I could be totally wrong in my recollection.

As for the earlier posts, I would be suspicious of any company offering a 60% savings on benches they say are worth $400.00 or more.

FWIW, JansenPianoBenches makes it very clear which benches are Jansen's and which benches are imported. And at pljansen.com, they do sell some imported benches (although they have fewer options than at JansenPianoBenches).

I am currently leaning toward an imported bench from JansenPianoBenches, but have not decided yet... I could "afford" the $800+ for a Jansen's artist bench, but I can't quite justify purchasing such an expensive bench...

The really great thing about the real Jansen benches is that they last a lifetime. Mine is probably over 20 years older and my last piano teacher’s is much older than that. Neither have needed replacement or repair.
If you amortize the cost over time, it is less than $4 per month😀

easy for me to say, as I got mine for free as part of my pre-owned piano purchase.

The CPS bench I would get if I order from CPS is on back order till Feb. 2022.

I bought one in leather and the scissors mechanism started to rock within a year. I complained and they sent me another and it did the same. These are not good. I would advise against. There are some better reasonably priced hydraulic benches which I have heard good things about. I just prefer the standard type and coughed up the money for a Jansen artist bench.

I was considering a hydraulic one, but the one that I liked the looks of the most had some reviews that it started to lean/tilt after awhile, so I crossed it off my list. And the other ones I've seen I'm not super fond of. -_-

Good grief, upgrading my piano bench is turning out to be almost as complicated as upgrading my piano was!

I've been reading with great interest about your quest, ShiroKuro, and it has inspired me to do some creative writing. I thought I might write another one of my awful pseudo-Haiku poems, but this time it came to me in the form of a blues song (my first one ever). This can be sung to a number of common blues tunes. Here it is.

I need a new piano bench
