Lately I've been playing some music that I would like to be able to vary the sustain, sometimes light, sometimes heavy. I can edit instruments in my daw of course to change the note sustain on any particular instrument but of course this is not very convenient while playing. I don't want to change my existing sustain pedal as most often I would just use it normally. I would like to get ( buy or make) a usb sustain pedal (or maybe set of variable pedals for various daw functions.) I think most if not all expression pedals are 1/4 inch jack and not usb? Maybe a foot operated potentiometer and an arduino card type setup? Suggestions?

Thanks Joe T. That looks like a good option!
But then I need two devices, the pedal and the adapter.
I was looking for an expression pedal with a usb port all in one but maybe they don't make them. I'll keep looking for a while and go this route if I can't find one.

again, not the all in one solution you are looking for but maybe a solution nonetheless?

Hello,

@jchaplain, A truly excellent variable/continuous sustain pedal is Kawai's F-10H. I am using two of these with my virtual piano setup, both of them connected through the interface that @jackopiano also suggests. (The third pedal, for I don't often use that one, is a cheap switch-type M-Audio model directly connected to my Roland piano).

Be sure to contact Rob at Audiofront.net before ordering any interfaces. From my use case he now knows the specific requirements to successfully interface the F-10H (because it's optical) and can therefore send you the proper interface(s).

Rob's interfaces come with good control software which provides a wonderful level of customization. Once you have tuned everything to your liking, the interface remembers everything. So, there is no software (nor specific driver) that needs to run to use your pedal(s).

Cheers and happy pedaling,

HZ
