My first post here.

I am a classical guitarist and I have to record a guitar concerto with a piano reduction. This is an unpaid proyect so it seems a bit unreasonable to expect a good pianist to join me out of the kindness of his/her heart so I have my own time.

I thought I would input all the music in midi and explore ways to get a decent "recording"

If I get suggestions I could explore getting the right software for it. My main concern is to be able to include the dynamics and expression markings and hopefully have a "human" tempo instead of a perfectly generated tempo. I will after all record the guitar my self once I manage to produce a good sequence (if I get there).

I want to believe the technology is there I just don't know where to begin so any pointers will be greatly appreciated. I apologise in advance if this is too much of a rookie question.

The short answer is yes. With notation software (Finale, Sibelius, Dorico), you can shape the tempo and dynamics however you like.

Thanks! Is there such a thing as tap/record the beat your self and the apply it to the midi track? With which one would you say is easier?

The aforementioned softwares are notation software, so you can write down everything you want and assign each staff to a different midi channels, to be played back by different instruments.

You can notate the piano part on a double staff and a click on a separate staff.

Of course, when you have the score, I suggest to make it reproduced by a DAW and not by the software itself, so you can assign for example the piano to track 1 and route it to your PA, and the click to track 2 and route it to your headphones or earbuds.

Yes. An avid USB one. Not too old

I would get Mixcraft, the easiest DAW to use IMHO..record it all in with guitar/mic. Do an audio to midi conversion (Mixcraft has this). Use the excellent midi piano instrument (pianissimo) and effects that comes with it. Of course all DAWs have adjustable 'humanize' abilities if you manually enter notes.
