Hi folks. I've just had my balance and key bushings done. Some are a bit tight (the keys aren't coming back up or are to slow to come back up and it's been a month now). What's the best solution? The tech's coming next month but I'd rather he spent his time regulating. Thanks a bundle.

It is not uncommon for repeated sessions of key easing (i.e. fitting) to be needed after rebushing. Few techs leave the cauls in long enough to thoroughly stabilize things. The general rule of thumb is 8-12 hours, however I have concluded that it really takes 48-72 hours for full stabilization. Then, even after that, the humidity is going to affect the bushings, and if they were very closely fitted (very little side play) initially (for good feel), they may begin to bind a little if the humidity increases 10-20% or more.

Additionally, sometimes a bushing is too deep in the key and binds prematurely, and the quality of the cloth used is a factor as well. Use of the Key Bushing Iron can solve some of these issues, as well as application of PTFE powder to the cloth (judiciously) can reduce friction.

It is important to diagnose accurately where the friction issue(s) is. It may be at the BR hole and not the bushing, or it may be the center bushing and not the front, or vice versa. I suggest that time be spent carefully fitting the keys WITHOUT intentionally overdoing it (so as to simply avoid having to come back). Proper key fitting and operation is the foundation for good regulation.
