Almost forgot ‘Adagio for Strings’ by Samuel Barber
Yes, it was originally written for strings but you can find any type of arrangement you would like (if you want to play a duet with a friend) - ive played the piano/violin version and the piano accompaniment is quite easy

"Sad Pieces" is a pretty broad topic.

I think this one is deliciously sad, as only the sad Russian composers can write. They are sad, they are glad to be sad - being sad makes them happy, in a sad way...

Sam, you’re so right about Russian composers. In my homage to Rachmaninoff, below is his Elegie, which has become one of my favorite pieces

"Music, rich, full of feeling, not soulless, is like a crystal on which the sun falls and brings forth from it a whole rainbow" - F. Chopin
"I never dreamt with my own two hands I could touch the sky" - Sappho

Another Barber piece. It’s so sad that I would start crying when playing it, mess up the keys, and finally gave it up.

I have nothing to contribute other than to say how I am enjoying listening to these pieces. And the ones over in Pianist Corner on sad/depressing pieces. One of my goals with the piano is to play what I feel and these songs certainly fit our current times. I can't play them (yet) but I can dream. Thank you.

Started lessons January 2020.

Well, let's not over-generalize. Many of his more virtuosic pieces like his etudes aren't really sad pieces. Some of the typical "happy" pieces by Chopin are the A-flat major Polonaise op. 53 or the Minute Waltz op. 64, no. 1. There are many more.

Yeah, his Military Polonaise doesn't exactly bring tears to my eyes either, except when I try to play it.

Casio PX-S3000
Nope, no issues with it at all.
Took lessons from 1960 to 1969, stopped at age 16.
Started again in July 2020 at age 67. Lots more fun now!

As sad a piece of music as I have ever heard.

I find this one fairly powerful in that regard.
