I recently purchased my first digital piano and I’m taking lessons (only had a couple) but I’m currently using an office chair as the seat and a stool in lessons. The stool I don’t find very comfortable but I was wondering what is a good stool I should get as I suspect I need one instead of using the office chair

Get yourself a soft thickly padded one. You can get a fold up X frame affair from around £60 (Kwik-Loc) or an adjustable piano stool for more. Some use the round drum stools.
Basic ones are hard after a short time and become uncomfortable.

Look for "drum thrones" in real, or online, music stores.

By and large, the thicker the foam, the better the seating. If you're in the US, Gibraltar (medium to high price) or Roc'n'Soc (high price) are good brands.

I use a "motorcycle-style" seat, found it more comfortable than the round seats. Tastes differ.

Roc-n-Soc makes a nice drum throne - I play drums too and that is what I use. They have an optional backrest attachment. Gibraltar makes one with a back rest also.

The downside is you cannot slide to the left and right on them which sometimes is necessary on the piano.

I bought a new office chair when my old one broke down. Got a new portable keyboard recently. Set it up on the stand and started using the office chair for playing. I was looking into buying a piano stool for about the same price. The office chair with back support allows me to sit for hours to do my computer work and the height is adjustable. The thing I find that I am able to do with the office chair is slide over for very low or very high notes. People just don't slide over with 4 wheels on a piano bench.

Eventually I'll get a proper bench for piano but at the moment, the office chair serves the purpose.

I messed around with several cheap benches before realizing that I needed a legit piano stool with continuous height adjustment (with the little round adjust knob on the side). I got one shipped from Europe via Thomann; it’s one of the more affordable K & M models. I love it, well worth the extra cost and effort vs. cheaper options. For some reason the big U.S. music shops (Musician’s Friend / Sweetwater) don’t seem to stock as many good options as Thomann. No idea why.

In general, I’ve been very pleased with K & M products. I also use one of their piano stands. The brand seems to make really quality and durable products. Worth it even though you pay a bit of a premium for their products.

I have this one since 2018 and it is comfortable and adjustable, and has feet rest, which is very important if the keyboard is high. I use a metallic computer monitor support, about 15cm tall, to raise the pedals so, along the feet rest, it makes the pedal use possible even being sit higher than usual.

OK, now I'm curious. What advantages might an adjustable stool (I'm assuming one like my drummer friends have??) have over the ordinary folding x-frame piano bench I've been using all these years?

(I can imagine a non-folding continuously adjustable bench of the sort I can't afford has advantages over my folding one, but I never considered a stool)

I bought one of these and have never regretted my purchase. It is extremely well made and feels so solid which is important when shifting your weight.
It will also comfortably seat 2 people.

I haven't received it yet so I can't tell you how it is, but it seems to get good reviews. Heavy duty, adjustable, and folds up as well.

I can think of three:

(a) My foam (on a Roc'n'Soc motorcycle-style seat) is about 4" (10 cm) thick, and contoured to fit me pretty well. It's really comfortable for long sitting sessions.

(b) I've set it up so the seat is free to rotate, which is nice for my back.

(c) I've mounted it on a base with a hydraulic piston, so I can raise/lower it without getting off. (Hydraulic bases are available for drum thrones, but I had an old office chair that I could re-purpose.)

I might be just as happy with a good (solid, adjustable, well-padded) piano bench. I'm not urging you to give up what you have.

I have a K&M 14085 which is very well built, adjustable and doesn't squeak, but is a bit too firm to be really comfortable. I have a sheepskin thrown over it to make it more comfortable.

All in all I'm very happy with it and expect it will outlast me.

If I practice on a bench in lessons is it best to get one of those at home instead of a stool? I feel like the stool might be better and would allow me to use to play guitar on it too compared to the bench

You may have other considerations besides piano playing but if strictly for piano playing then a bench is superior to a stool. It lets you sit more stably and doesn't risk tipping over when you lean towards the edge of the keyboard for those high or low notes.

I am probably peculiar but I like hard seats. I kept on breaking the legs off my original bench and hitting the floor. Tired of screwing and glueing legs back on I bought a posh “artist’s bench” but couldn’t stop it making noises during recording. Finally I bought a simple, cheap as chips wooden bench the piano shop wanted to get rid of and it has proved just the job for over ten years.

Definitely a reason for a bench rather than a stool. Even if it's only half a cheek. I scoot left or right to depending upon the music. I'm 6'2", with a pretty wide wingspan, it's still nice to be able to scoot left or right.
