Hi there.. just curious if this combo performs correctly?

Might grab one as a cheap controller if so.

Thanks

Hello,

@GWILLY, I use a Roland FP-10 solely as a MIDI piano controller (same action as the FP-30X), and its MIDI behavior is excellent.

I don't play Pianoteq myself but have used my FP-10 in the last few weeks with the Pianoteq 7.4 standard demo version, and haven't encountered any problems or unexpected behavior.

I would expect the same from the FP-30X.

Cheers and happy decision making,

HZ

You'd be able to use it as a good conroller, but unless you have an "audio in" you'll need external speakers if you aren't happy with headphones 100% of the time.
You'd need to move up to the FP60 to achieve that.

If you read the Pianoteq forums, you'll see that lots of people use "entry-level" DP's as MIDI controllers for Pianoteq. The FP-30/ FP-30X should be fine.

According to its specs, the FP-30X has a "continuous-detection" damper pedal available. I'd get that, as an accessory if necessary. Pianoteq responds nicely to half-pedalling.

I would get the FP-30X version if you can as it has a built-in audio over USB Cable.

All these years playing and I still consider myself a novice.

The FP30x is an excellent MIDI Controller, very precise and reliable across the whole 0 - 127 range, and imo the best choice in this price bracket, especially in combination with Pianoteq. And, as others have mentioned, due to the built-in audio interface of the FP30X (only the X, not the FP30) you can choose the FP30x as the output in Pianoteq and it will play back Pianoteq through the internal speakers, no external speakers needed.

Others might similarly point out, or rectify the following.
Audio usb is for playing music from a usb device, and has a latency which is enought to deter one from playing a VST through this method. I've mentioned this already, unfortunately.

And ... why go to the trouble of using a virtual instrument to generate fine quality piano sounds ... and then send that sound to crap quality keyboard speakers?

Peterws: what you say is based on actual experience with a roland connected through usb, or is it simply an opinionated statement? As far as I know, yamaha usb audio interface (p125, p515, etc) do not have significant latency. Is it different on the new roland series?

Yes I'm surprised by this, I tried an NU1X with built in audio over USB, via an iOS DAW, there was no noticeable latency at all. Both ways!

You could also consider a used portable piano from the intermediate range, as those tend to go for about the same cost as a new FP30-X with stand etc.

Sorry guys; no attempt to discredit anything or anyone, but I found the opposite, and others have too; there was a thread on the P515 which encompassed this. Perhaps the iOS DAW whatever it is, works better than AS104ALL but in my case I just used the audio in jack.

The thing is that the VST can often reshape the sound going into those crap speakers to make them sound pretty good!

Same opinion.
I remember a statement of a Genelec engineer: their digital active monitors might have too much of a delay for real-time applications such as playing music. I don't think other companies do this job better than Genelec. If latency is priority, stay as much analogue as you can.

I use the Roland fp-90x with an iPad Pro with usb mid and audio and with the buffer set to 64 I find it has very low delay.

It is a simple one cable solution.

I’ve used external speakers that digitize the analog signal and have appreciable delay.

It’s not clear to me if the line ins on keyboards are digitized.

Some people might use an external usb audio device.

I think the fp-30x might be my choice because of the usb audio in. However I just watched a review from Stu Merriam music and he couldn’t get the piano designer app to work anymore with the fo-30x.

I hope that is just an error on his part but if true that would make me hesitate.
