My mom has a Chickering & Sons baby grand from 1926. I had it tuned recently and noted that it is very loud sounding and hard to control. I don't remember having this problem in the past but it has been some years since I played this particular piano. Is it possible that the dampers/hammers need adjustments to quiet down the sound? The sustain pedal works properly so it isn't that. This piano has a very light action. Maybe I need new felt on the dampers and hammers? Or am I off base on this? Anyone with tech experience out there that can chime in?

Regards

Did your regular tuner technician not offer any comment on this? The normal working life of a piano before needing comprehensive renovation is around sixty years.

The piano had not been tuned in some time. The regular tech passed away some time ago so I had to find a new guy. And, no, he said it was the room having lots of floor to ceiling glass windows and a very high ceiling. However, it was never like that before in the same house and room. So I suspect he may not have wanted to do all that work....honestly, if it needs that much renovation it probably isn't worth the money unless it can be done for a few hundred dollars....

If anyone is interested in working on this piano and you are in or around the central California coast, please let me know.

At nearly 100 years old I would EXPECT it to need work. Felt loses resiliency, regulation goes south, etc etc.
