I have been gradually expanding my equipment for recording my piano playing. My list is:
Blüthner Model A
Sound Devices MixPre-3 II in audio mode (I also have the Musician plug in)
Neumann KM184 matched pair in close AB mode
Neumann KLM 107 in figure of eight mode for ambient
Reaper
Mendelssohn - On Wings of Song

I would be interested to hear comments regarding the recording not the performance which has a couple of splash mistakes.

Nice, although my ear was drawn to the creaky stool (particularly as I noticed it on one of my own recordings recently)

Also, I'd possibly suggest repositioning the mic at the top end as the higher frequencies are pinging out and I'm missing some of the lush bottom-end.

Yes the creaky Concert Stool. I'll get the grease out on the mechanism!
I have a new file of the recording as on replaying I thought it would be too low in volume for many devices. Here is the new file:

Ian - I liked your recording a lot. It was interesting (to me) that the sound was a bit "dark". I didn't expect that from the KM-184s which Neumann describes as "...having a slight treble lift". That seems to be nicely balanced by the TLM-107 which rolls off most in figure 8!

Did you do any EQ?

Anyway - very nice recording.

Were it me, I'd experiment with mic placement a bit to determine if you could get a little less emphasis in the tenor area of your piano.

But... you've already got a VERY GOOD recording IMO, and your Model A really sings.

Andrew,
I made no post processing at all. Thanks for your observations. My setup using iso tracks allows me to alter the volume of each microphone in the DAW. Of course it does not allow me to alter the mic positions and that is part of the art of recording piano. I have noticed that certain treble notes are over emphasised and on the next recording I will increase the mic to string distance. Similarly I'm going to increase the ambient mic distance even although the KLM107 in '8' mode has excellent front/rear attenuation.

The recording is mono.

So I can't say anything meaningful about the microphone setup.

I have already pointed the poor tuning on the other thread.

I've had good luck with a tall Steinway Upright with an ORTF pair ~ 5ft. out from the soundboard.
