Hello All -- is it normal / usual for one but not both heating rods to be warm on a PLS system? Yesterday is the first time I noticed it -- at the moment the rod nearer the tail is activated/warm but not the other.

Assuming that the non-activated one is plugged in the same as the hot one, then it has failed and needs replacement. A rare occurrence, but not unheard of.

OK, thank you. I've alerted my tech, but I think he may be away on vacation, which is why I didn't ask him in the first instance. Do you know if it's OK/safe to leave the system running in the meanwhile? I assume that's better than nothing?

Yes, perfectly fine. You did check the connection at the plug...yes?

I'm kind of a mechanical idiot -- do you mean making sure that both rods are plugged in under the piano?

Thanks; it is. My tech replied and has ordered a replacement rod. Do you have any guesses as to how effective the system will be with just one rod operating?

What size piano is it ? For grands up to 5’9” one long heating bar is fine.

Oops I just saw that it’s a Yamaha 6’3”” S4 model so ideally 2 bars are better

Yeah, I suppose one is better than none. Noticeably the octave and a half a half above middle C has sharped slightly. A=about 440.8.

Just to update, the dehumidifying rod that seemingly failed started working again after a couple of weeks (while waiting for a replacement rod), and I understand that the rods, if defective, virtually never do that. So the culprit was identified as the 3-way adapter, which has been replaced -- so far, so good.

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier. I would have suggested getting one of these.

could have helped determine the condition of the 3 way adapter (assuming that one of the rods was heating at the time you plugged it into the adapter).
Handy to have one around to help determine if power is coming properly through an AC outlet.

Question to those who use Piano Life Saver dehumidifier rods with floor length piano cover - what happens to the condensate?

There is no condensate since it doesn't get cool enough to condense (under reasonably normal conditions).

Then, considering that this is more or less a close space, dehumidification does not happen? It becomes something like warm sauna?

I.e. Piano Life Saver dehumidifier should not be used under floor length cover?

The PLS is designed to operate in an environment between about 35% RH and 65% RH. It cannot defend against tropical or desert conditions. One needs more to adequately deal with extreme conditions. Under a cover in moderate conditions it usually works quite well. (I would not recommend a plastic cover...it must "breathe").
