This recital will open for submissions January 1st 2022 at about 6AM US Eastern time, and will go live January 15th 2022.

Edvard Hagerup Grieg (1843 – 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He composed dozens of pieces for solo piano, at all skill levels. The "Lyric Pieces" are a collection of 66 short pieces for piano, published in 10 volumes. They are varied in character and mood, and reflect some of Grieg's favorite themes - think nature, folk music, trolls, and elves! But there are also many more solo piano works, including traditional piano sonatas and pieces for children.

Here are the rules for this recital:
1) Only pieces composed by Grieg.
2) Any skill level - plenty of music to choose from.
3) Duplicate pieces are allowed - you may perform the same piece as someone else.
4) Multiple submissions are allowed.

If you would like to pledge to play something, see the post after this one. Pledges are non-binding, and just serve to let others know that you intend to participate.

I officially gave up on the March of the Trolls this morning. It's that 32nd note run. Anybody else play this? I cannot play that figure smoothly. It's my fourth finger. I've gotten plenty of advice and tried everything I have heard of. What works best is to curl the fingers a bit and just rotate the wrist. But my 4th finger either doesn't sound or sounds with 3 or 5. I am really good at scales, but this is very different, since it is 5-4-3-2-1 or 1-2-3-4-5.

I have already spent over a month on it, and have the A section memorized. But I did a recording this morning, just to see what it really sounds like, and all I can hear is that ragged figure. Which is everywhere.

So I am cutting my losses. I am probably just too old and arthritic to play that figure, at least in public. It is fun to play - I love that middle section, and the energy of the "March". I'll just have to play it for my own enjoyment...

Don't sell yourself short; at some point it may just come together. The similarly difficult "Puck", which I did my very best with at the May recital this year, starts off with a very rapid pattern which I could not actually deliver at speed (and even at lower speed it still came off badly). I have kept the thing alive (on a slow burner) and in recent weeks somehow magically, this particular pattern is starting to sound right.

It may need more time than is available for the Grieg recital, but I'm sure it would be such a sweet victory to finally overcome the obstacle. It would be for me.

Ah yeah, that piece beat me too.

The 32nd note runs are almost like glissandi. It's a different sort of technique to playing scales - like you say, you have to rotate the wrist. I had to practice this movement in isolation by itself for two months before it sounded OK.

But then there is another major difficulty... the jumping octaves in the left hand. At tempo that's really difficult to do and I gave up on it after a while.
