Hi All,

I recently acquired a Steinway baby grand from my priest that has been in their family since new for over 100 years. The stories they have date it back to early 1910’s where it spent about 30+ years in a rectory in Brooklyn followed by about 70 years in the same location in Princeton.

I played piano as a kid and am trying to get back into it now.

From what I gather based on the serial of 168542, it appears to be around 1914 make but there is no indication of model in the usual triangle spot. Measures around 70” from back frame (not lid) to front so I’m guessing it’s a Model O. Also, the front sign says Steinway & Sons Makers which does not seem standard.

I will add photos as soon as I figure out how to but in the meantime, maybe someone can help based on the name, length and serial?

Thanks,
Nick

Nice old piano! If the pictures show it in its current home, you'd be well advised to put some distance between it and that radiator.

Thanks. Any thoughts on the logo? I can't seem to find many pianos with that logo that says "Makers" below (just added a photo to the link). Only the uprights from that era. Also, any thoughts as to why there is no model letter in the usual spot? These two differences threw me for a loop as it didn't match much of the information out there on the web.

Thanks, surprising it still works quite well given it's all original. Didn't really lose tune in the move either. I realized it's quite shoved up against the windows/rads so I have to pull it out a bit but waiting to get some additional muscle! I have an A/C in the tower to keep humidity down in the summer and a large humidifier I plan on keeping near by for the winter.

The Steinway & Sons Makers decal was standard at that time. I had a V with that decal. Steinway did not always stamp the model designation on their pianos.
