This video from Kawai just came up on my FB feed. I was expecting a Shigeru or maybe a GX for their featured performance, but this is a GS100. It sounds wonderful to my ears. Someone has kept this venerable old piano up very well.

Ps: it's a link to a video posted on Facebook so I hope it works.

Pps: let me know if video doesn't play and I'll try to find a workaround.

Emery - the piano, the recording, and the playing, sounded great to me too. FWIW - it looks like it was recorded with 4 microphones. My bet is that the mix is 2 LDC mics (not sure what brand) and 2 ribbons. I couldn't see them well enough to identify which types, etc.

Well, this is the best sound I've heard in a long time in posted piano videos. Doesn't hurt that, as Seeker says, the playing is great. But I'm amazed at the sound. No weird stereo effects, no treble brightness. Just a sweet, coherent piano sound.

Seeker - did you see mics other than the two LDC's? If others were there - and quite possibly they were - I missed them. (Kept getting fooled by the reflections in the piano lid!)

The piano is probably not that old, maybe 20 or 30 years old. The manufacturing techniques in Japanese concert grands means that these pianos are lasting way longer than people first expected them to last, so it doesn't surprise me that this piano has a fine sound. It may not be up to a concerto anymore, although with the right technician I'm sure it could. The fifth octave is a little dull, but that's something I've encountered on many older Kawais.

Nope - just the 4 mics I mentioned.
I checked out the artist's website, and from what I could see, this is his home studio set-up. I might write him and ask about his recording technique.
