Hi there,
I'm new to the forum. I joined looking for info/thoughts on an upright by Sherlock and Manning Piano and Organ Co., serial number 13657. This would be for myself to learn on (I am a beginner, but with strong background on other instruments), and ideally my daughter, who is 6 years old. The instrument has been with the current owner for over 70 years, is "well cared for", including 7 years ago refurbished, rekeyed and tuned. I expect that's a long time in piano terms, but they're offering it free, and to move it. I didn't find any free Yamahas or other preferred brands. Seems like a good opportunity...? Is it critical to have it inspected by a technician? If so, any referrals for a trusted one in Halifax, Nova Scotia?

Definitely have it looked at by a competent technician. Pianos are expensive to move and dispose of... you don't want to take on a five-hundred pound liability. Can't help you with Nova Scotia techs, sorry.

Also, if you are not a pianist, you may want to have your piano instructor (or your daughter's) or a pianist friend take a look and give you their thoughts.

Ok, thx, WG. Hopefully the seller will allow a tech in, during covid and all.
