Ok, I currently mainly use a 88 key hammer action board playing VSTs on either my desktop or iPad. Now things are opening up I want to be able to go mobile - so am considering swapping my board for a budget-ish portable digital piano, and can supplement these with with sounds from my iPad. Actions am less concerned about (my playing is not up to much) but speakers are really important - both in terms of output and clarity. Where I live trying something out is pretty much impossible and its so hard to judge these things online.

I really like the PX-S3000 just in terms of functionality, form and look, despite peoples misgivings about the action - but have no idea about the speakers. What do people recommend as the best sounding DP in this range - again not so much the piano sample quality but the quality of the speakers in a small-ish playing environment.

Many thanks in advance

Kurzweil KA90 has very good speakers relative to its price and its travel weight. The sounds are sub-par, but you can easily use it just to trigger your iPad sounds instead.

Unfortunately you can only be certain that the built-in speakers in this range are poor. That doesn't mean they're all the same though - actually there are more considerable differences between bad speakers than between good speakers - it's just that noone cares much for exploring them smile So I think it is a better idea to look for an external solution.

Regarding the PX-S, I was also quite underwhelmed with the sound in person. Though the reason was likely that the speakers fire from the rear and in that store they were pointing into relatively open space - for the player it might have been better placed against a smooth sound-reflecting surface. I don't think they're powerful enough for any gigging.

The "Pianoforever" YouTube channel has some reviews of cheap digital pianos, often evaluating and demonstrating the speakers too: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCx-WOQTMkoTuTUPOIFfm2Bw

The KA-90 isn't hopeless piano sound wise:

Casio CGP700 with the speakers in the included stand, added in the mix. It’s not the most sophisticated piano sample and action (almost nothing at this price point will be), but it has a lot of features and a ton of speaker power for the price. Been around for several years, so you could possibly find a good used one.
