Dear forum,
I am looking for some feedback/opinion on a potential piano.
It is a Wm. Knabe, 6 foot, built in Baltimore 1979. Model 190. 6’1” in length. Serial #193045. Piano is in good condition (two keys have some rattle, but that’s it).
Asking price is $1700.

I am a beginner, but my first vertical (Young Chang) was just ok to get me going, but I saw this Knabe, and seems to be a good opportunity to get a good grand at a good price?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

I had one of the Aeolian Knabes, 5-8 size. Very pleasant piano until it became untunable. One problem was that it was hard to make the strings render, so your ordinary piano tuner wouldn't do it, so the piano fell out of tune almost immediately. One unison never did sound right -- the tech wanted to put a larger tuning pin on one string. Don't know if it would have worked. The sostenuto tags are fixed, so you have to force the keys past them, making it impossible to use in soft passages.

Overall, not a conservatory or concert instrument, but OK for home practice if it'll stay in tune. Insist on getting it tuned -- at that asking price you may have to split the cost -- and if they can't do it, pass.

When I upgraded to a grand from an upright, I found the Presto Agitato from the Moonlight Sonata just naturally went twice as fast.

Edit: By the way, it wasn't actually built in Baltimore, but instead at the Aeolian factory in Rochester, New York. They made Chickerings on one line and Knabes on the other.

Definitely get a piano technician to inspect it before you buy it. Know as much about it as possible before you make a decision. 👍

In 1979 there were not many great pianos being built in he USA. This Knabe is no exception. However, I have seen a few that had had some beautiful action work done on them that really performed well, but that would be an exception rather than a rule. In the late 1970's most American built pianos lacked solid finishing of the action.

Bottom line - have the piano examined before jumping in.

Good luck,
