A neighbor moved away, leaving us an old upright: Henry & S.G. Lindeman, # 34399 which I believe dates to 1908 or 1909. It's missing the left pedal and there are a few sour notes, but we didn't have a piano and I couldn't turn down "free". So now I'm trying to figure out what is fixable and what isn't.

One item: I see at the bottom where the bass strings are fastened to the hitch pins, the was at one time some felt or damping material sandwiched between the string and the frame, but this seems to have mostly decayed away. Would it be correct to assume some kind of damping can and should be added there?

That felt is not crucial, but if you restring the piano, you could put it back. This would be some felt cloth such as is used for key bushings. You probably could not get it in the same color, even considering whether that is the original color, but color, especially on the inside where people cannot see it, is not important.

You may need to replace all the pedals to get a match.

Lindeman made good, solid pianos, but 112 years takes its toll.

Everything is fixable.

With a bit of mechanical savvy, a few common tools and a tuning hammer you should be able to get it in shape for playing. If a string is dead replace it, if the tuning pins are loose use ca glue or oversized pins etc. A lot can be accomplished without spending much.

There are many YouTube videos on how to do repairs. Many sites for info too. I found
stevespianoservice.com useful for do-it yourselfer info.

Good luck and have fun with your project.

Sorry John , but looks to me like the bass bridge is cracked. You may want to hire someone to see if something can be done there.
